Hi all,

Aurora Australis and a Burning Tree, Tasmania, 19/20th of May, 2013

On the way to the location where I shot my images "Tranquility" and "Iris" we came across this tree burning in the middle of a field. We took some photos of it under the moonlight and then continued on. After the fog forced us to leave Oatlands we came back to the tree but by this time the moon had set to reveal the aurora in all its beauty. Foreground is lit from the lights of a passing truck.

Really nice work Greg. A magical image. The different colours, the different elements and the superb processing all come together.

Amazing work as usual. Here I am just trying to capture an aurora but your shots also have balance & star details & other amazing foreground elements.

Really, really good Greg.
Great simplicity and I love the colours.
For some reason my eye is initially drawn to the green patch in the lower left. no idea why, perhaps the detail on the horizon? anyone else have the same initial reaction?
I love this sort of simplicity.

I enjoy seeing views from latitudes further south than I normally get. Unfamiliar is good. :) Very nice as always.

Thank you so much for the great feedback everyone :D

Yeah I tend to view the image the same way Michael. For me, I think it is because there is detail in the aurora there rather than just a uniform green which is all that I have captured before.

Is the aurora common in Tasmania or still quite a rare event?

Greg.

Greg, auroras in Tasmania are a relatively "common" occurrence, if you count green glows close to the horizon. Every so often, during a moderate to strong geomagnetic storm, they can become quite spectacular.

What Carl said Greg. Depends how you define common though. Tasmania gives you the best chance of seeing/photographing one in Australia (apart from Macquarie Island) but there can be months between displays even at solar maximum. I have now spent 28 nights in Tasmania and there were visable aurora on 4 of those nights, but only one display (and the only one I saw) lasted more than an hour or so.
