Cascade II

Hi all,

Woolshed Falls under the Milky Way, Australia. 7th of June 2013

Slightly different view to my last upload. As was the case with it I had to blend in a longer exposure to bring up some detail in the falls as it was so dark there. But unlike "Cascade", which was a panorama, this is just a single shot field of view.

I would love to know which one you like best out of the two. I personally feel this one has better composition and colour but the other has better detail.

Both incredible scenes but perhaps for me this second one is more realistic? The first one is great but for a trained eye the panorama view Milky Way doesn't quite match the apparent 1:1 view of the falls..? This second one is closer to what an observer would see..? Both hug worthy though :2thumbs:

They are all incredible but I think this and your Hanging Gardens are my two favourites of your work :thumbsup:

Hi Greg,

I much prefer the single frame over the pano. When I first saw the pano I thought it was great but this single frame is excellent! :thumbsup:

On my screen (at least) I can see plenty of detail in the falls i.e. Rocks, water flow, colours and shadows. The Sky and the the galactic centre's colours and detail are just how I like it i.e. blues, yellows, orange and a hint of green.

Side by side the sky in the pano has more of a purple hue which I don't like as much.

I agree with Michael, the Milky Way in the pano loses it's proportions.

Excellent composition as always Greg.

Falls are hard. I have some from the Kimberley that I haven't processed yet because they are so dark. Will likely have to stack them to get enough light for a single image.

Yeah I agree with you there Mike. The panorama on reflection looks a bit.....squashed in the sky in relation to the falls.



I have to agree with you about the purple hue to the pano Carlos. I have actually since reprocessed that one to bring it more in line with this one but have not released it yet.



Yeah I know what you mean, especially on a moonless night in a nice dark location. I don't like doing composite images like this, but I felt that I had to do the location justice. The only ways I could have done this in a single shot was either with some light painting (which I tried but couldn't get the look I wanted) or with the "magic glove" technique which can be a bit hit and miss. I would have tried that but I was starting to have issue with the light water spray off the falls on my lens and needed to get the data I wanted in a hurry.
