More data from Jupiter on 12Jun06. Mintron camera in the SN-8. 400 frames aligned in Registax with wavelets.
In this one I paid attention to color balance and the result I think is more 'natural'.

What is it that distorts the shape though? Is it the eyepiece projection? What eyepiece did you use?

The colours are good, Bill. I'm beginning to think mine has too much of a greenish tinge, now that I see it with untired eyes. You have quite a bit of belt detail too.

Thanks. The image looks close to circular. Is the distortion something present within the image ? It's a prime-focus (no drizzling/resampling) shot taken with a Televue x4 Powermate and a 2x Orion Shorty-Plus Barlow. What am I doing wrong?

Seems a bit contracted on the lefthand side. Because of its rapid rotation, Jupiter is noticeably wider across the equator than the poles, and this doesn't seem to be the case in the image.

I just had a look at your website, Bill. Love the M83 and omega centauri photos especially. Great stuff! Am I allowed to mention deep sky on this forum?! :whistle:

Does this help pin down the cause. Here's an overprocessed stack which shows some wierd circular patterns in it. This happens for any stack where I ramp up the wavelets too much.

Those circular patterns/rings are the result of oversharpening.

Onion rings can also appear even with little sharpening, and can be caused by not enough exposure and/or bad seeing.
