What works best for you or your product/business?

My son made a DVD,and we promoted it on the net, over
3 months,got two sales.Recently a national magazine did a
half page review on it,and put our address of where to send
cheques too.Got so many cheques in the mail,we had to order AP's largest
bulk lot of A5 'tough bags' to send all the DVD's away in.Might have to order another 100 soon.

So,everyone goes on about the 'net' this and that, and 'tablets' and how
printed publications are on the way out,and not as much interest in them.

Clearly,on my recent experiences, this is far from the case.

Glad to hear of your and Joel's success. Guess target audience makes a difference.

I know of someone who uses the Facebook ads to promote their business. He reckons he spent <$500 on advertising and was rewarded with $30000+ turnover. The Facebook ads are apparently quite targeted, depending on what is written in your FB posts and what sort of pages you have liked. I've never clicked on one, but obviously some do. Now that FB is being increasingly accessed via smart phones with less screen real estate for ads, they are apparently losing effectiveness though...

I've absolutely no experience with the above (you know what line of business I'm in) and it's only based on some articles I've read in the mainstream media or via word of mouth, so please don't base your marketing strategy on it!!!

Thanks David,yes-it sure is a turn around from two sales on net, compared to the results from national magazine.I guess, advertising to a selected market, means there will be different avenues to them.

I too have heard people, like the person you knew, that promoted their business etc through FB and do very well.Joel runs the FB page, but I feel
the wording and how the DVD is presented could be angled differently to the type of people that would be likely to buy it. He rather busy doing work in the film industry at present,so I might have to have a fiddle on FB (I am really not into FB),but if wants a share of the loot,he might have to do it the way I want :P all the cheques are made out to me:)

I might try putting it up on ebay, but will wait till the magazine sales fizzil out.Interestingly the DVD was made for the U.S market-we even spoke in pound and miles, but to date not one sale in U.S(it seems a very unusual country even try and deal with),but ok in Japan,South Africa,U.K,and now Australia-never thought I'd get any sales in Australia--but after review in magazine that's now in every newsagent in Australia-its really taken off!

Chris, the internet seemed to work pretty well for you and your Moon/plane photo

Chris,

it's something of an unfair comparison really.

Your magazine article/review was always going to do better as it's a much more targeted audience. Also, you mention 'review' which sounds like the article was written by someone else, the editor for example. And as we know, recommendations by third parties always carry a lot more weight than something the seller himself may write.

It's just a shame you left it 3 months online before trying something else.

For my two bobs worth, I'd definitely include the same ad in the magazine for at least the next two issues to cement the value of the item being offered. Lots of people will only buy once they see that something has been 'around' for a while. It's definitely worth doing!

Maybe even try in a yank or brit magazine. They have far more peeps reading them than we do here. (You never said it was an aussie mag, I'm just assuming this much).

All the best with your sales Chris, and well done to the lad on being so pro-active in his entrepreneurial skills :)

Thanks Troy and Paul.

Yes-Paul,was an Australian magazine, some good points you mention to think about. Will try the U.S bit again-although,seems a very hard place 'to get in the door'.Interestingly-that 'moon/plane pic never got published in U.S-everywhere else in the world it took off.
