Carrying on from the motorbike thread, I ended up with a 1986 K100RS and the boy got a 2013 F800R, both BMW's. I did a fluid/filter/plug change on mine as I was told it had been sitting for a couple of years.
We did a run last Sunday out through harley country in the brisbane valley, around the dams to pmrid's place to pick up some bits and back across Mt Glorious through cafe racer territory and back into town. About 400Kms.
On the fast sweeping bends in the valley mine was wallowing, not secure at all. I thought the boy was having trouble keeping up but later learned he had to run in 4th gear out of 6 to match my power band :(
This week the rear shock has gone for a rebuild, it is an untouched original 1986 shock :rolleyes: I pulled the arse end and gearbox out to lube the drive splines. Yuk, cracked boot behind the gearbox, leaky main seal in front of it, goop everywhere. It took a lot of effort to get all the bits out and then clean the crap off. But it has to be done. There's another couple o hundred in parts from the UK.
I've since been chatting to a guy in the UK who restores these bikes and just have a look at what a brass brush on a slow drill and WD40 does to alloy. Amazing.

Hey, its a 27 year old motor cycle. Things are going to wear out but, you look like your pretty handy with spaner....At least you don't have to worry about chains and sprockets. Better have a squiz at the brakes, change the fork oil and make sure there's no play in the steering head bearings. Should handle like new one then!
Oh, it doesn't have a power-band. Thats the domain of 2 strokes...

Nice work ! watch the F800R for ABS faults. Expensive to fix.

Deeno, I changed ALL fluids when I got it. The front end had been lowered an inch by moving the forks up in the yokes but I've put everything back to standard apart from fork oil. BMW deliver with 7.5, I'm using 10. And I've replaced pads but the rear disk is suspect. I meant to say pickup, not powerband, but same thing, different jockey :) And steering bearing are due next week :)
Dave, the F800R is a new bike, 2013. 2 years warranty and 2 years roadside assist.

But they are great bikes to work on, very car like with the dry clutch. I like it :)

Nice work Robin :thumbsup: I seen a nice BM just yesty, 6 cyl 1600, 2012 model, you might be fimiliar with it ? I didnt know beemas were made that big : )
I have a 2000 model ZZR1100sports tourer which has been good weather lately to streach her legs. Also must throw a couple spanners at a given 1983 900 Boldore, I got it started after I overhauled the carbs as it had been sitting for 6yrs before it came my way, Engine sounds real good, so anticipating a full strip down to the frame for a backyard restore :thumbsup:

What are you doing man! We're astronomy nerds dammit. Not supposed to be seen in leathers zooming around the countryside. Haven't you got something software related that needs doing in the observatory on sunny weekends? :P

Hey bob, the K100 was a ground breaking bike. First with a computer, in 98 it was first with ABS, first electronic dash etc etc. They still make a Kbike but not a flat 4, it's what you saw and was inspired by the cylons :) The smallest modern BMW I know of is a 600cc scooter. Very flash indead :)
Get a grip Rob, it's been raining since november. Why have $6K worth of stuff out back you can only use once a month if it's not overcast. Now that's stupid.
Hey, its bad enough its been cloudy for 6 months without you reminding how insane astronomy is as a hobby! :lol:
Sounds like you and the son have been having fun on the roads though.

Deeno, I've lost count of the bike I've owned but this is my third BMW. The others where flat twins. I gave them up when the kids where born and we needed cars to transport them. 22 years ago ....

You should try polishing the alloy cases, the result is even more astounding. It's far better than chrome and a wipe with a rag keeps it shining.
It took me around 200 hours of sanding then polishing to do the head and foot peg brackets on my K75c.
How are the drive shaft bearings looking, I've only replaced mine once at around 350,000 km. The bike has 475,000 km on it.

The last guy didn't know about spline lubs so they have been replaced and done religiously ever since :) He didn't know about the one in front of the gearbox, which is one reason I'm in there now, but it looks ok too. It will take 2 weeks for parts to arrive from the UK to button it up so I have some time available to get the crap off the alloy.

One stuffed swingarm bearing, I've order 2 but not BMW bearings. I want to simplify things.
Getting the bottom race out will be an issue for all of them. I've heard if you hit them with a welder and run a bead around 1/4 of the race, when it cools it will drop out. I'm lining that up right now :)
The top steering bearing showed obvious signs of brinelling as did one swingarm bearing. The swingarm roller was all over the place as well, it was really stuffed, full of goop from the oil leak in the gearbox, the steering roller bearing, not so much but I'll toss it anyway. I'm not replacing the bottom steering bearing, it looks good and is a hassle to swap.

The steering bearings are not original and have been replaced so it's not been adjusted correctly.

I've read you can just repack the rollers and the indexing will go away but if I see obvious signs like that, just swap em. 20 Pounds delivered ex UK cos I could not find an ozzie shop selling bearings online.

Hey Robin while you have it in bits why not slip a turbo on. Give the boy something to aim for when you next go riding. ELF make some nice fuels too, slip some in the tank, pull out the oxygen sensor and you will leave him in your dust :).

Ric, I have an account with simplybearings in the uk. You just need to know the bearings dimensions, Quality bearings at a reasonable price. Munich is motobins biggest customer, verified by UK agents. Pity they add a 100%+ markup on all parts.

Woo hooo. Parts are starting to arrive.
Engine rear seal and o ring are installed. New clutch is in. Gearbox is back on with new rear boots to stop the oil leaks.
Instrument panel is repaired and rebuilt with LED lighting.
Got a steering bearing today so at least it now has one wheel, I'm sure it needs two. But front end is done.
She's wearing a dress as all the engine cover panels are off till the new cam chain tensioner and valve shims arrive.
And the swingarm bearings are taking forever to get here.
The boys F800R is also in shot there.
I see the light down that tunnel getting brighter. Almost there.
Bloody motorbikes, had to pull absolutely everything off the front just to change one bearing ....

Here's another installment.
Got the bike back on the road. All major parts are installed and it's roadworthy again. The shock refurb and bearing fixes have made a world of difference to the bike.
Took a run to the servo for fuel and it cutout on me. Waited a minute or 2 and away it went again, got the fuel, pumped the tyres and headed home. It stopped again. I jumped off for a smoke, we obviously had a heat problem. It started again and I nursed it home, turning it off at lights till we got there. On the last 500 meters odd it was cutting in and out.
This bike has a set of hall effect sensors to trigger the ignition. I hit them with a hairdryer while idling and got the same result. Cuts out and will not restart till it cools. New, this ignition plate with the sensors and cable costs $600 in oz, $400 from the uk or $70 2nd hand from a wreckers if you can find one.
Jaycar sell hall effect sensors for $20 each. Got a pair of them, made them fit and fixed it. I also found a 2nd hand set from a uk wreckers and have them in the mail just in case. Woo hoo.
Just when I thought it was ride time, parts arrived to fix the wobbly stand. Back on the jack it goes.
