Well, havent watched Dr Who for ages, not a fan of Matt or the red bird, but decided to watch last nights season finale, and wow, what a great episode, and what an ending!!! :eyepop:

Yea that was one of the better episodes, I love the twisted time concepts. The series seems to have been aiming at the younger market of late. Who do you refer to as the "red bird"? If its Amy she's been gone for a while now. You can watch it for a few days online at ABC iview

I think Dr Who has probably always been aimed at the same market... its just that they keep getting older and expect the show to age with them. Hiding behind the couch as a kid has always been a feature of watching Dr Who... :)

Thought last nights final was very impressive - especially the last 30 seconds!

Wow - John Hurt as the new Doctor - or actually an old Doctor.

What is interesting is with the series return there has been a gradual trend for the Doctor to have younger and younger incarnations and now we have a complete back-flip with a very old Doctor.

From the grapevine - rumour is that the John Hurt Doctor is a past incarnation before the series resumption with Eckleston and is actually the Doctor responsible for the often referenced time wars leading to the genocide of the Darleks and the Timelords - hence the comments about doing what was needed to put to an end the madness etc

Finally a bit more of a serious vibe to the show. The last couple of episodes have been better than other "Matt" episodes.

This episode seems to be setting up Dr Who to reflect some of the much earlier shows ( Peter Davidson & Colin Baker Doctor's) where the Valeyard was first introduced/mentioned as the Doctors evil incarnation.

It would be great to see a tie into the even earlier mentions where Rasillon supposedly orders that the Doctor was to be killed at specific point in his far future.

I want to see The Master return. Loved the reference to Thomas Thomas guiding the Doctor through the backstreets 2 EPs ago.

I thought that the John Hurt Doctor did something using the Doctor's real name in the far distant past, which explains why he has hidden his name. The Doctor's name has been secret from the start of the show and using the Time Wars as the reason would not make any sense. His part in the time wars has also been referenced by others and under the name of The Doctor.

so, i do not think the rumours are true.

HOWEVER, since this is Doctor Who, anything can be written in and it does not need to make sense or tie in with anything in the past.

For instance, in this last episode the Doctor mentioned that he should not cross his own timeline and how bad it is if he does but two (?) episodes ago he did just that (the one with the salvage operators). meh!

Is John Hurt the next doctor though?

I am not so sure and think it might just be a guest starring role, like David Morrissey was in The Next Doctor (2008 Xmas special). We will just have to wait and see. Hope it ain't too long. :sadeyes:

I really don't care who the Doctor is, as long as there is one. I have watched this show from its very first episode. Being quite young, when the Daleks first appeared, they use to scare the crap out of me. For some reason, it was more moody and scary in black and white. It had a charm all its own when it was a low budget show, shaking sets, poor costumes (monsters) and, in some cases, appalling acting. But none of that mattered.

The reboot of the series has also been great, just love it all.

John Hurt can't be the next doctor because he is from the doctors past and the doctor must regenerate into the next doctor. Rumor has it that this will be at the end of this season. We will have to wait until november 23 for the season to resume. I too have watched the saga from the start, although I was pretty young for the first doctor who episode. Thankfully because of the age of the internet I have managed to obtain every episode still in existence. Some of the old episodes have quite good story lines even if the sets were a bit basic.

Including Scarf, which is quite usefully for star gazing at this time of the year

She also doubts that John Hurt is making a comeback

I'm not sure how they are going to do it because they are going to have to break the 12th regeneration rule however it has pretty much been confirmed that they are going to change it so it has to be explained away some how, and Smths Doctor is in my mind now the 12th Doctor.
Enter John Hurt.
He clearly has heavy involvement in the Time Wars and we will be going back to them for the final, I think he is the 9th Doctor.
The anniversary show will also see the return of Tennant, and in the last episode we had the prophecy from The Silence.

"On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no living creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a Question will be asked, a question that must never, ever be answered"

Neither the 11th fell nor a living creature spoke his name.

Well you can see where I'm going with this....

Still none of that explains how they are going to deal with the lore of the 12th regeneration.
Smith has said he is staying on for next year too but how much of that you can trust I don't know, I wont believe it until I see a contract.

The next episode is the 50th aniversary special and will also feature David Tennant and Rose Tyler as well. I guess the Doctor has really messed with his timeline this time. It is going to be filmed in 3D as well.

John Hurt is not an Old Doctor coming back but is actually a Future Doctor (either 11th regeneration or 12th regeneration) that seemingly turns bad and calls himself The Valeyard. The Valeyard was first physically introduced as a future Doctor somewhere during the time Colin Baker played the Doctor (i think Trial of a Time Lord Episodes) but was also verbally referenced earlier as well but was not named.

The lore of the regenerations is that each Time Lord gets 12 Regenerations.

So if you work that out there will be a total of 13 Doctors because the First Incarnation is not a Regeneration.

In any event they already set the precedent with the Master that given access to special circumstances/enough power that a Time Lord could essentially reset the regenerations and have virtually unlimited regenerations.

Also it was mentioned in past episodes that the Original Time Lords (like Rasillon and Omega etc ) were actually Immortals.

At some stage they imposed the regeneration cycles upon the next generation so that the Time Lords would be able to renew/refresh their bodies and minds and not become stale or set in their ways and stagnate.

I think John Hurt will be Doctor "8.5", the incarnation between McGann and Eccleston. When he speaks to the doctor, he is talking in his past tense, and the current Doctor may not know who he is if it is a future Doctor.

Anyway, was a great episode with a cool ending. I hope it goes on well in the 50th Anniversary Special and not fizzle out like so many Steven Moffat episodes do. They start so well and get wrapped up in the last 10 minutes instead of being continued next episode.

I also do not mind Matt Smith at all, he is quirky enough to be a good Doctor, I think the scripts really let him down sometimes.

You too Grant huh. When I was five or six I still remember being scared out of my skin everytime the themesong would start. I would go behind the couch and peer around or just race outside cause I was just too scared. First time I watched E.T. I could only watch the first min and no more! :lol:
