Raw video on 5diii, would this work for planetary imaging?

As I understand it, you need a CCD camera to do planetary imaging, or is it still possible with any dslr with video capture? Enlighten me!:question:
Does RAW video change the game between high end astro CCD cameras and DSLR's? I imagine cooling would still be a factor.:shrug:

I ask as on a long term shopping list, would you opt for a mid level DSLR and a CCD specifically for astro work, or a higher end DSLR if it could do both?

Hi Dave,

I'm no expert at all so forgive me if my info is wrong, but I am not sure how useful a full frame DSLR camera is for planetary work as they give a wider field of view than an APS-C sensor, which is generally found in the lower end models (smaller sensor than full frame). You can do planetary work with an entry level DSLR these days and deep space with it too, even in my entry level canon 600d which has smaller aps-c sensor you want to utilise the 3x video crop mode (zoom), most of the time -and it even has 30fps in full HD mode. von Tom on this forum gets great results with this setup. However, I still think a specialised planetary CCD will give better results.

Using the standard video modes won't be all that useful as the FOV will be too great. However you can capture the zoomed in liveview stream from cannon DSLRs (no idea about Nikon) using backyard EOS. Another way to capture the liveview is to use a program called "extrawebcam" which turns the camera into a webcam, then you can use sharpcap or something to capture. That's on Windows but I'm sure there are similar applications for Mac.
