Carina - mosaic

Hi guys,

Here is just some experimental mosaic work. I think it actually turned out pretty good, waaay better than I expected. As soon as the weather clears I reckon i'll widen the field a bit further :D

I think it is made up of about 8 panels from memory. the setup was with the SW12" goto dob, and a modified canon 600d. DSS, CS6 and to stitch I used Windows Live photo gallery. I tested it last month on a moon shot and it worked like a breeze so decided to see if it could handle a multi-shot and I think it worked well. Before using this I tried mosaic mode in DSS and it was a massive nogo, although the output file size in windows live was pretty tiny. it may be a different story if you tried to stitch before processing in photoshop etc but either way my laptop would explode if it tried to handle that many files - it froze on autostakkert and registax the other day :( need more power!

Good stuff Russel. Nicely done.:thumbsup: But beware. Once you stitch you can't stop. :)

One way to go around loading every single sub in RAM in registar is to 'batch'. You first load the sub that is sort of in the middle of the finished product. Then register the whole directory to it as union. If you're short on RAM you can do this one at a time and save the intermediate file. Once you have your scaffold, load it then register all the subs one at a time from the original directory as union then save each file and unload it from RAM. This will allow you to mosaic large areas with minimum fuss and RAM. If this is not clear just PM me.

Thanks Ross, i think it will be one of the last deep sky adventures with my goto dob (photography-wise); my new equatorial setup isn't too far off - getting excited for that :D

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. All the hallmarks of great image, Russell. The uncropped version showing the overlap has grown on me as its starting to display resolution but what its lacking is imaging area. Panel overlap is too high. Planning can assist with this. Mosaics present various challenges and you've decided to confront those head on. If this is just experimental, I can't wait to see what you come up with when you really give it a go. Well done.

Thanks for the very kind words Jase. definitely agree about the overlap, could have saved myself quite a bit of time and expanded the fov. I was unsure if the goto dob would show some of the fainter nebula further away from eta carina. will definitely attempt some more mosaic'ing in the future, this exercise has shown it to be worth the effort.

some clear weather and the arrival of my EQ8 can't come soon enough ;)
