I was a tad surprised to find it is still possible to buy a real museum piece such as these....

... Expensive shiny junk perhaps, but it does make you think how tedious it was to observe anything much with such a scope, poor optics, awful eyepieces, no circles, painfully small field of view. Only a true masochist...

Remember how (then) Patrick Moore used to rail against the infamous pillar and claw stand! How would he know these were real antiques in the making?

Seriously, these prices are absurd and meant for people with more money than sense. I doubt the Grubb 4" would get more than 5,000 pounds at auction.

Looks familiar (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=42729)...

Still trying to get mine valued and find out if it actually belonged to William Macdonnell (http://www.nma.gov.au/collections/highlights/wj-macdonnells-telescope).

Almost identical to this one (http://www.carters.com.au/index.cfm/item/142152-a-brass-telescope-mid-19th-century-london-by-eg-wood-the-brass-b/). Except that it has W Macdonnell embossed on the back of it.
