Hi all,

We spent a wonderful 4 nights at Broome over the past long weekend and the trip happened to coincide with the Stiarcase to The Moon phenomenon which the locals love celebrating (I'm sure mostly for the tourst $ benefit! :) )

I wasn't expecting much at first, but the whole experience was quite amazing. From the markets they put on, to the hundreds of people who turn up and the cheers as the moon peaks over the horizon.

Read the full story at my blog with more pictures to set the scene ..

reminds me of the Mayan celebrations at Chichen Itza at the equinox .. the serpent slithers ;) [completely different to the staircase but still similar ;) ]

Yes I know what you mean :)

I have wondered if the Aboriginal people of the area recognized the event at all.

Nice Roger. I remember seeing all the postcards around Broome with the 'staircase to the moon' shot. Lots of different interpretations of it, some artistic, some photographic.

Quite a show they put on.

Thanks Mike :) Yes it sure surprised me a first what a show they put on. Makes good sense though, and the tourists love it from what I saw (I certainly did) :)

I almost bought a painting of the Stairway to the moon from an artist at the market ... kind of wish I had. :)
