The Jewel on the Mountaintop is an excellent history of the ESO observatories in Chile.

I know I've worked on the appendix 1 ( Telescopes 1962-2012 ) in ESO 50th anniversary book " Europe to the Stars " which You download for FREE as a 36.8 MB .pdf file
