Vela is perhaps my favourite southern object. I started imaging this a long time ago and there were few images of it then.
Since then there have been some spectacular images of Vela. Rob Gendlers' 16 image mosaic probably being one of the best. Bert posted a superb narrowband image recently and Marco Lorenzi did a marvellous Pentax 300m lens 4 image mosaic.
Unfortunately The Sky X only takes you to one part of Vela. I spent probably 2 hours searching around to orient myself. I realised eventually Marco's image was sideways! I used his image to pick an area to image.
There are the 2 loop areas with a strong shockwave line running down to a Y section near the gum nebulas.
The 2 loops probably have the most detail in them and in Ha they are a maze of tiny tendrils and loops.
I plan to take some more wider images of this whilst its up and perhaps a mosaic. Its available right after dark to about 12:30am at the moment so its well placed and we have probably another month to capture it at the moment. It'd be great to have a Vela-thon here at Ice in Space. I know Bert is keen on this object.
I have another version to process which is all narrowband Ha, O111 and S11. I'll post the Ha as well which is extremely detailed.
AP140, PMX mount, Proline 16803, 4 hours 40 minutes
Ha O111 LRGB.

Thanks Trevor. I do love this area of the sky.
Cheers Larry. I plan on doing more of this area whilst its still up.
It tends to sneak past and next thing I know its low on the horizon.
Greg.
Like this a lot. Plenty of fine detail and I very much like the framing and processing.
cheers:thumbsup:

A vela -thon, eh?
Your fine image certainly inspires one to try.
As long as the weather gods cooperate...

Thanks David. Its a large area and plenty of potential areas to image. I think the double loop area is the most interesting part of it though.
There is a Y area below this that could be good. I tried it last night but it was a bit disappointing. Not as much detail as I expected.
I can feel a mosaic coming on here.

Man Greg!
You certainly don't do things by halves.....I almost fell into the large version. :D
Reminds me of a celestial jellyfish for some reason....in a good way!
Keep em coming.

Amazing work!
The photos are beautiful. So much intricate detail.
Good luck with the project.

Ah the good'ol Vela SNR, it's a real winner and yet another reason why we have it better down under, nah nah n-nah-nah :D
Nice rendition Greg, the Ha is nice but personally I like the OIII in this area, love that turquoise blue it imparts  looking forward to the alternative versions I recon we are gunna see from you ;)
Mike
ps Aaaah, I see you have had a shot at NGC 5084 in Virgo with the 17" ;)

 Thanks Chris. Its a pretty wild area of the sky.
I wonder how hot they are really. Its such a large area I think the next image will be with my TEC110 and I'll try a mosaic.
Thanks Ross. Those 2 loop areas seem to have the most detail in the area but its so extensive.
Yes I prefer the O111 as well. Love the colour it gives. Yes I started NGC5084 - a bit poor at this stage. It needs more exposure time. Nothing like yours. I also did a short one of that other galaxy area you did. You seem to have a knack to find interesting and new areas of the sky to image. I'm a Sidonio Stalker:rofl:

Great image, Greg! It's a lovely target and you've really done it justice.
Splendid work Greg! I like how you have handled the Ha and OIII blend or more specifically the saturation. Did you relayer the Ha as a luminance, if not it maybe good to see what it does to the characteristics of this image?
Well done.

Thanks Pete. Its my favourite area of the sky.
Thanks Marcus.
There was this link to a larger version:

If you want an even larger image I could post one.
Well said.
Cheers Rick.
Thanks Jase. I didn't use Ha as luminance. I used to do that but I found too often it washes out the colour at the expense perhaps of a bit more detail. Overdone it can bring out the Ha salmon colours. But the Ha is more detailed so perhaps this one should have some as you suggest.

Sorry Greg, just fending off another poor jealous northerner
Agree. You need to also add Ha data to the red channel to counteract this. I would do this anyway by default but appreciate it may not be understood by others. Sorry for not being articulate.

Thanks Allan, a nice compliment.
 I was going to say something sarcastic but just managed to restrain myself. M13 - hehehehe almost as good as the very memorable Pelican
I was making a layer for Ha as red by deleting green and blue. I suppose that is adding to the red channel. I watched the Astrodon tutorial and Don has quite a nice way of adding the channels for narrowband which I will be trying out in the next few days. I will revisit this image then and see if there is a gain I can get from that rich Ha detail. It often surprises me how much of the fine detail you lose from the Ha when layering it in. A lot of the fine detail seems to vanish. So I need to revise my procedures there. Its not quite there yet.
Cheers Marc. I spent at least an hour framing another image of Vela recently. Then I did a narrowband run on it. Next morning I checked it and realised it was largely the same area as this one only a bit more down to the left!! I spent over an hour framing it!!! The Sky X does not show the Vela SNR only a spot so you are left trial and erroring it at a rate of 30 second images in Ha to even see what your scope is pointing at. Add the complexity of which way the image moves when you use the hand controller and you go up to an hour easily in 7C temps!

Here you go, the file was smaller than I expected (its 15.9mb though), more pixels here than Henry the 8th had wives!:

Very nice image Greg! Just wondering - how long are your subs?
gregbradley
02-05-2013, 09:09 PM
Thanks David. These were 10 minutes. Later ones were 15 minutes and several other narrowband were 20 minutes. As long as the tracking is holding up I am going for 20 minutes as standard -30C.
Greg.
