This would be pretty great! :D Courtesy of BBC:

Researchers believe they have come up with a new type of LED-powered streetlamp that could radically reduce light pollution. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22292129)

Current designs "leak" large amounts of light in unwanted directions, obscuring views of the stars, wasting energy and making it harder for drivers to see.

A step in the right direction. Now, if they could all pick a single wavelength for streetlights (perhaps as a national standard), we could filter that out.

But ...

Councils will have to display intelligence and forethought first. Ha ha ha ha!

Less light polution would be a major bonus, plus the power savings would be significant and there's no warmup time so streetlights could even be put on motion sense after say 10 at night.

Sounds like a great idea to reclaim the skies.

The only issue with LED is with places that snow/ice. The LEDs dont emit enough heat to melt it off, unlike incandescents.
