The guy in this clip makes me really ponder about the mentality about guns in the US.

That is funny, and disturbing at the same time.
I regularly watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, so see quite a few things like that.

I saw another PC comment tonight. A video of a young woman demonstrating a rifle explained that her 5 yr old nephew harvested his first deer with one.

Scary stuff, who really would want to live in the wild west. Some things never change. The national rifle association I think it is, really is law over there in my opinion. Easy fix, since they want to fire guns, send them to Afghanistan where people shoot back, that might sort them out.

I just hope I don't get shot whilst in the US for six weeks. I have to admit that it is the one thing that scares the crap out of me. But then again, I am more likely to die in a road accident there. It doesn't stop me from going though. :)

He does make 1 very good point, if you want a gun to go spree killing there not that hard to get off from that friend of a friend.
I will say control is needed though its to far overboard here and for sport and hunting its bs, though the lifes its saved is great. If only victorian police would stop shooting people now hahaha Though i'am betting these new PSO's kill more then they save, police drop outs with serve psych problems armed to the teeth on public transport ;) lmao i can see the ciggerate packet warnings smoking has the same likely hood of killing you as being shot on a melbourne train by a PSO, hell i think i would quit if i read that hahah.
lmfao are you planning a trip to south central LA wearing a KKK outfit? Theres a drug called Prozac ask your doctor about it if you really feel that way XD.

You make a good point Marki
Greenies don't tend to kill people, people who talk about killing greenies do though, hence we need gun control.
I know who I would rather have more of

Oh dear, here we go.
There are ignoramouses and extremists on both sides of the debate and rational argument is impossible with either. This interviewee is always going to be for selling guns on lemonade stands. Arguing with him is just being done for our viewing pleasure. Real debate on the topic is difficult and polarising because it can be, and is often deliberately made to be, so emotive.
It's also important for us Aussies to realise that our culture and psyche is not the same as an American's. Our history is different, our world view is different and even our basic concepts of liberty are different IMO. We Aussies shouldn't overlay our cultural beliefs / norms on them - that would be to deny them the freedom they (and we) cherish so much. We are not better than them nor they us. We're just different.
Cheers, Marcus

No we're not. We are all humans with a conscious who should know better than to kill other humans, and be able to live a peaceful existance without needing to be armed and afraid of being shot in the back.

I would luv to have a simple little slug gun so i could "selectively" kill off Indian Mynahs in my back yard, and hence protect the envirnment.
I'm sure multi shot rifles could also help in the "selective" killing of wild dogs/cats etc ( esp if yr aim isnt too good :-) ).
The fact that some nutters usage of them has resulted in pretty much blanket bans seems illogical to me, when death by motor vehicle, tobacco, alcohol etc still wipes out more people than guns ever did.
I guess its like anything. If there is no real revenue loss to the Govt, they will ban things, but not if it involves loss of money.
That said, I fully agree assault rifles etc should be banned.

It has nothing to do with Greenies or those annoying Indian Mynahs
There are controls on the use of Alcohol, driving, driving and alcohol and tobacco use and deaths from each have dropped significantly as a result, even more may well be worth it too and this is all the US is finally trying to do ie add controls to the access and use of some fire arms by some people in order to start the ball rolling to reduce the alarming gun death toll...I mean, is it reeeeally that hard for some people to grasp

I Shoot Indian Mynahs, but the problem is they learn very fast, and will fly off even if you pointed a stick at them. I now hide in the bushes and take them out, since i started my culling 4 years ago the population of Rosella's has tripled, its gone from seeing 3 or 4 Rosella's a week to seeing 10-15 a day! and its wonderful!
I completely agree full automatic military weapons should be banned, but i think banning semi automatics was a bit of an over kill. A semi auto would be a great help on my property for controlling rabbits, foxes and other feral's.
I cant imagine why any civilian would need a full automatic military rifle like the AR15??

I am a firearm collector. Had that discussion here previously.
I must say I distance myself extensively from the American "gun nuts", because, put simply, they are odd. They believe it is their God-given right (because, apparently, the constitution and the NRA are GOD).
I participated on American collector websites (including being a forum moderator, and still am on one - CALM, SERIOUS collector site) for 15 years. You quickly learn a LOT about the American psyche that does not gel with most of civilisation. In the end, it repulsed me. SIGNIFICANTLY. A true example of megalomania society that thinks it dominates the world, and all must follow suit or else.
That is NOT an American bash, as I have a LOT of true American friends, but...
America is slowly learning reality, after decades of propaganda and supremacy dogma. As much as I dislike Obama, I find it fascinating what he and the Democrats are doing to America, and actually succeeding bit by bit. In essence, bringing the USA down a peg back to reality and opening their eyes to the truth of the world around them.
America needs controls on not just firearms but in a LOT of other areas.

The AR15 is NOT a fully automatic rifle in spite of Obama's rhetoric to the contrary.
The AR designation stands for ArmaLite Rifle. The main stream media have leapt on to the band wagon suggesting it is an Assault Rifle... but this is a distortion of semantics.
Incidentally, the gun control lobbyist harp on about adopting UK style gun laws in response to the Sandy Hook shooting without even realising that the AR15 is one of the rifles NOT banned in the UK.

The UK gun laws are an interesting topic in themselves.
Since their introduction, gun crime has increased 50%.
Many gun nuts stand 5-ft tall, have big beer bellies, big mustaches and loud bar room voices. Take away their guns and you take away what little self-esteem they possess.

I find it strange, (not) that when ever there is a mass shooting in the USA, we plebs downunder, get it splashed across our TV/ screens ad nauseam.
When at the same time in some other far of place in the world, the exact same is happening, and our MEDIA plebs, say zip.
I think US gun culture is a bit over the top, but history shows what happens when you disarm the masses.

Gday Mike
Sorry, but for the harm these things do, and the number of people who still die or have their lives destroyed each year, the current controls are a joke, "relative" to the gun controls brought in.
How many drunk drivers get "let" back on the roads?????
( vs just ignore their conviction requirements )
Ie why not force people to also have drinking and smoking licenses,
and you lose em if found guilty of any offences:rofl:
If you get a licence, you immediately renounce your right to free hospital care for any harm caused by your habit??
It would be fun to see that enforced.
All too hard, and too much money gets lost.
Blanket bans on anything simply makes policing simpler as you are always guilty, just by the act of possession ( like laser pointers  )
Andrew
( off to make some homebrew and watch the Mynahs laughing at me )

I hope you understand I was just pissing in your pocket with my greenies crack, I saw your post and couldn't help myself. A bit of dark humour seems to fly over the top of so many heads on this forum. I love trees and Koala bears and big stinky whales and Tasmanian devils and all the birdies in the sky and fungus on the trees, even gun wielding brainless American rednecks :D. Their gun laws suck, no politicians are willing to commit political suicide by changing them and the slaughter of innocent children and adults continues unabated. Tend to agree with Marc (multiweb), 5 months to go then probably 10 years before they get another look in such is the cost of reform ;).

Its amazing how facts can be distorted to make a good story and paint someone in a good light when only half truths are told
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-01-14/australians-own-as-many-guns-as-in-1996/4463150
The yank is an idiot but Howard was no saviour the Liberals reaction was a knee jerk response to the Port Arthur massacre and only made it harder for law abiding citizens to obtain semi automatic firearms.
Larryp
25-04-2013, 11:31 PM
Gun laws are only obeyed by law-abiding citizens anyway. We seem to have more and more shootings around the Sydney area.

IMO both sides of the debate often oversimplify the argument. The worst case manifestation of this is spewing forth emotive one liners or slogans believing it's all simple.
The elephant in the room is the US Constitution. You can't legislate against or hinder gun ownership (long arms and pistols) until you change the constitution. Changing a democratic constitution is no mean feat - and rightly so!!! The other elephant in the room is the traditional American reluctance to accept government regulation in favour of self regulation. Some would argue (as I might) that this is a primary element of true freedom.
If you're interested in the real public opinion in the US on gun control then look at this - it makes an interesting read:
http://www.pollingreport.com/guns.htm
This contrasts somewhat to the opinion of US law enforcement personnel:
http://ddq74coujkv1i.cloudfront.net/p1_gunsurveysummary_2013.pdf
You may get a clue that it's not as simple as you think.
Cheers, Marcus

The right to self defense is also a major issue in the debate. I thought this was interesting:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2012/02/21/disarming-the-myths-promoted-by-the-gun-control-lobby/
The following blog seemed to be one of the more "reasonable" pro control opinion pieces. But even it acknowledges the right of self defense. Alas, the last para loses me as it's simply a political and ideological rant.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/01/19/1180414/-The-Importance-of-Gun-Control
The solution of course is to find common bipartisan ground. If you looked at the polls in my last post you'd see there's plenty of common ground to be had. Unfortunately, there are too many political hacks on both sides.
Cheers, Marcus
