OK just putting the feelers out therfe to the knowledgeable, what is an ideal refractor to match a Baader Safety Herschel Wedge? I dont want expensive but i dont want cheap either, i was thinking of a Orion 100mm or an ED80. plan on using a DMK41 or similar to image with?

Dave I,d go for the 100 although youll probably get the whole disc on the 80. Personally after viewing all the WL shots I,d be inclined to go for 140mm as this seems to be the minimum aperture to really capture the granulation in great detail.I have an 80,102 and 127 and use the 80 most as it also gives a full disc with the CaK B1200 Wedge and Gstar chip.
Cheers Derek

so a cheap 150mm refractor would be good? as this will be the only thing this wedge will be hooked up to i want to make it right. also thinking that this will be in mono then a simple lens structure is ok?

I should note i have had the wedge now for nearly two years - its still brand new in the box

Believe it or not the very inexpensive Celestron 102 GT works very well with the Baader Herschel wedge.

Why not try a few of those that are out there, either at a dealer (Bintel maybe?) or at a star party.
I agree, the 100+ seems like the choice. And not necessarily an apo, most of my Ha is done with an old Zeiss achromat, good optics, but an achromat. W/L with the Herschel should be the same.

David,
Any good achromat will work well. Other refractors also work well providing they don't have rear elements (ie the Genesis Petzval design)
I had a SW 150 f8 for a while but found the general seeing conditions and the availablity of a suitable mount meant that it wasn't really being used.
The TS 102 f11 I bought for a PST mod proved to be a great compromise. It works well with both the PST mod and the Baader Herschel wedge.
The size of the solar disk is approx. 1/100 the focal length. You can check this against your CCD chip size.....

i have the mount - a titan and soon probably a eq8 for field work ;)

will have to do a chip scope comparison

thanks - will see if i can do that and consider these scopes

Just use CCDCalc to verify the solar disk, camera plate scale.....

Why not the North group 127mm?

WELL I DID THINK OFTHAT BUT THE IDEA OF POINTING THE OPTICS TO THE SUN DOESNT come easy, if something goes wrong id rather cheaper...

I'll match your wedge and raise you a brand new 150 in the box for four years. :P

Hah !!
And here I was ready to give in to my 130 being your sacrificial lamb.

The 127mm would be a great choice!
Just make sure the finder is covered! The Baader Herschel wedge (with the ND/ Continuum filter) is in place and the scope pointing to the sun ( check the shadow) before removing the objective cover.
The solar image on the rear of the heat soak ceramic makes it very easy to get final alignment....
There's a lot of sunspot activity at the moment...you don't want to miss out.

;) My Tak SKY90 is a great match with my Lunt Hershel wedge .
Better than any full aperture filter I have ever used . And the Lunt comes with a built in ND filter .
You dont need a larger aperture scope to view the sun as its plenty bright enough  .

 You want to know something ?
You dont need aperture to view the sun as its plenty bright enough .
There you go you learned somethng today . .
