I picked up a scope from the old Revolve at Mugga Lane in Canberra this morning for $30.

A 4" Celestron Newtonian on what appears to be an EQ2 mount.

I've wanted a scope for home to do some casual observing every now and then. Can't beat that price!

I've never owned a Newtonian before, and, I suspect this thing will need to be collimated. I have no idea how. :D

Nice mate! Got a Newtonian myself and it is pretty easy to collimate if you have the right tool.

I am after one at the moment but I have been collimating it by following the instructions in my telescope manual. Something about making sure your eye is centre when looking into the focuser. It has been working but I would like to make it bang on centre!

Enjoy it!

While you wait for a collimating tool, a basic one can be made with an old film cannister if you have access to one.
The cannister's are a nice fit inside a 1.25" focuser/adaptor, just cut the cannister's bottom out, drill a 2 or 3mmm hole in the cap and yer good to go ;)

I have plenty of film cannisters. :D

OK, what do I do after that? Do I just defocus a star and then start wrecking the secondary with an allen key? :)

RCOS. lmao! Could you just imagine?!

I saw it pop up on their Facebook page yesterday. It was in the back of a truck along with a whole heap of other stuff. Went there first thing this morning and got it. It's in great condition!

Wow! Maaaaaaan what is it with everyone throwing out their scopes in Canberra. Didn't Baz score one this week too
Errrrr keep an eye out for a trusty little G-Star for me would you please. Actually a Vixen Polarie thingy might be niiiice too.

Congratulations on a good score H. I have a 4" and I love it. In fact it seems to get more use these days over my 10". Great for spotting a quick gap in the sky & doing a quick session.:D I've even turned into a permanent solar scope (well not me, hubby lol) using the dust cap which has been adapted. And when I want to observe at night, I just remove he cap as you do to use the scope.

Here's some collimation tips if you still needed them.

This one is a gem, performed by the team at Orion Telescopes:

And this one is quite comprehensive and a favourite amongst many here:

Not wanting to start a new thread on where to scrounge an old film canister to collimate my DOB, does anyone here want to send me one? I'll paypal any costs to you of course :) On the Gold Coast.
