That looks like a persons (or aliens) head front on looking slightly right with the brain the size of a peanut.

OK, I may be showing my ignorance here, but why do I only see green in the unstretched tiff?

Why is the full field red toward the top, and green toward the bottom?

I think because Ha is mapped to green and there's a lot more towards the bottom out of the field. I've noticed that also in some of my much wider fields on the area.

That is a very nice version Marc. Much more subtle than my technicolour yawn! Even the image orientation is better! I am totally new at this narrow band in Hubble Palette stuff.

Thanks guys. I used the exact same procedure in Photoshop from the link you've posted Bert. I'll zip the PS file with all the layers and post a link here so you can retrace all the steps and do your own tomorrow. The rest was done with Startools. I'll also post the Startools.log so you can recreate the steps here too.
The trick with the color balance in NB is to replace the colors like the PS tut in the link you've posted. But for it to work you first need to load the linear TIFF file in PS and use curves (CTRL+M) until the histogram is similar in R,G and B. Curves are better than Levels (CTRL+L) because you have a better control of the histogram mid-range. To replace colors let's say cyan into blue, you need enough cyan to start with or you won't bring up any blue. This is why it is so important to boost the cyan in the original TIFF before replacing colors.
Anyway it will all makes sense when I send the files.
PS: added the files below. Obviously subject to seasoning to taste and making your own rendition, but that gives you the gist of things and a base template to work from. Startools flow and settings were initially recommended by Ivo on another file but I played a bit with them as well. Maybe there's a better way to do it but that's the result I liked for this rendition. Have fun. See what you come up with.

Thanks Marc. I tortured the histograms with curves and got this. It is x1.5 times native pixel size. 20MB

I even used GradientXterminator to get rid of gradients outside the main nebula and 'balance' colour. Got rid of the red outside the main nebula.
