What a find. I dropped off a load of lawn clippings at the tip today and returned with an old busted 4 inch Newtonian telescope for $15. I took it to bits and found it full of mud, rust and spider sacs etc.
I cleaned it and repaired the mount for the finder scope which was snapped. The plastic legs that lock the legs into position under the accessory tray had snapped so I cut some copper tubing to length, flattened the ends a bit and drilled holes to suit then replaced them.
VOILA!!! The observational collection for visitors to ASIGN II grows!!! :D
A quick collimation on a star tonight and a calibration on the moon proved worthwhile. Not fantastic as the mirror has not been looked after and is scuffed, but it's quite good enough to view the galaxy on the lawn.

A nice find there. You never know what you'll find at the tip.
I like my 4.5 inch MEADE Newt. so much I had the mirror re-coated and over-coated with some hard stuff.
Its good for splitting some favourite doubles.:D

Nice find. Love the setup you got!
Can never understand while people throw away something like a scope.
They could have just as easily given it to a school or someone like that.

Right place right time!
OO! Where can I get the mirror re-coated? Does it cost much? Is it worth it?
Thanks man!
Instead, I got it! :D

Where did you get that brass telescope from? I love those, one day I would like to have one just for display.

I had a 10" Dob that came out of a tip in NSW. Had a great mirror (One of Satchmo's creations from the 1980's), recoated by Astro Optical a couple of years before. Tried to give it away to the local schools as it wasn't getting much use. Never even got a "No Thanks" reply to any of my emails.
Eventually advertised it on Facebook and got $200 for it.

Well if anyone has got any old telescopes to give away, (even crappy ones) I'll take them for the beginner nights I will be hosting here for schools and youth groups!

It was given to me by a friend.
If you want one, Bintel is selling new ones. http://www.bintel.com.au/Telescopes/Refractor/Classical-Brass-Telescope/1491/productview.aspx

Hi Baz
Avandonk (Bert) is giving away (at a nominal cost) an ED100 to a good home.
He maybe swayed by a public interest reason such as your astronomy viewing nights for students and public etc.
See beginner astrophotography page.
