canon 1100D noise

I have just moved to an 1100D from my 350D, and have noticed that
for any similar exposure at the same ISO setting there seems to be more noise. Also, when using Live View I can't see anything fainter than
Jupiter on the screen unless I turn the LCD brightness to maximum.
Is this normal? any input would be appreciated.

I got told to stay clear of the 1100D for this reason (noise) so ended up going a 7D. Of course, I don't know if the stories are true or not having never owned one. Couldn't be any worse than my old 400D surely.

No the 1100D is way better noise wise over the 350D, its very close to the 450D noise wise. http://ghonis2.ho8.com/DSLRcomparison.html has all the data to prove and shots. If you leave the camera running live view and don't let it cool off before shooting of course there will be more noise. I would get a cooler box and i think you will be blown away with the results. I always use usb pc remote mode and never shoot with the camera its self, get your self a notebook and backyard eos :) Have you tryed adjusting your iso ect?

I will say these camera's are the bomb and nothing come remotely close at the price bracket for astrophotography, they do however suck due to lack of features for normal photography by mid level and pro's, but hey what the hell do you expect for $300. These camera's are that good that these guys have spent god knows how much building a full blown TEC cooled astro cam out of them for resale http://www.centralds.net/cam/?p=1687 . I'am also doing my own rip of there camera with a tec and cold finger, just check out the results.

Lol noise :rofl:, I think some ones telling pork pies, thats the 550D people are saying. The 1000D was noisey the 1100D is very much like the 450D. I think you just said that to your wife to justifie the 7D, smart move ;) by the way you can't compare a 7D $1350 against a 1100D for $300 haha

Hi Raymo,

As Jay has stated you need to turn live view off once you are set to image. If left on the exif temp will be up to 41c once turned off it will be half that, and thats on a night in the high teen's c.

The other thing to do is, go to menu on your camera, scroll across to the star, long exp noise reduction and select auto. Then High iso noise reduction and set to strong for high iso. You can reduce the levels of both depending on conditions on the night.

Hi Raymo, all good replies above, but as for live view being dark, if it is not already set from factory, go thru the menu and turn the 'Exposure Simulation' on. This should help a little if it was off.
I will say tho that the live view's sensitivity for astro work is limited and I do struggle sometimes to find a star to check focus with.
Also note, sometimes there doesn't appear to be a star on the screen, but if you zoom in to 5x and scan around you sometimes will find one.

Thanks again everybody for the help. I bought mine at H.N. for $328,
great buying. Only one query; I can't find a feature called exposure
simulation anywhere in the camera's menu, and can find no reference
to it anywhere in the manual.
Please forgive my ignorance; I've been film imaging for over
50 years, and like many older people, I have been dragged kicking
and screaming into the digital age. I am having great difficulty coming
to grips with Registax etc: and as for Photoshop, forget it.
There doesn't seem to be any books out there aimed at
introducing newbies to computer processing of images, like step by
step. Maybe it's because younger people pick it up more easily, and
therefore don't need a book, and we oldies are presumably only a
very small segment of the market.

My apologies Raymo, it looks as though the 1100D does not have this feature.
In other models the Live View options menu has an option labeled as "Expo. simulation" (as pictured)
I had wrongly assumed this was available to all Canon's DLSR's :(

Magiclatern firmware is currently being made for the 1100D, hopefully that will unlock it if its just firmware based. Hi Jay I downloaded Deep Sky Stacker and it stuffed up my laptop.
I couldn't shut down the laptop.It informed me that the DSS drivers
were interfering with things. It also stopped the uninstaller from
getting rid of it for me. In the end a system restore was the only
option left. I am reluctant to download it again.
