PANSTARRS setting over the ocean

G'day all,

I think it's the first time I've ever shot astrophoto's over the ocean :) Was a learning experience ... didn't predict the wind (which wasn't too bad, but a bit stiff) to be such a problem! it limited my focal length.

I took a few shots down there on Fri night but didn't have anywhere near as good a result as you did, I should have taken the Astrotrac with me.

Sorry, I should have thought to ring for permission first :)

My family has a holiday house down there which I've spent quite a bit of time at over the last 30 odd years so I'm reasoanbly familiar with the area even though I don't live there. Hence chose it as a coastal location to try :)

Definitely take the AstroTrac ;) but I should've picked a more sheltered position or somewhere I didn't need to have the tripod extended so high to see over railing. I was planning on a different spot but when we returned from getting fish & chips a bunch of picnickers had taken it! :tasdevil: probably pesky locals ;)

Nice! I used to rent a place on the beach at Mersey Point just a click or two down the road(@ Pengiun Island sandbar, took photo's of Hale-Bopp there in '97 ;)) but the owners sold and the new owners wanted to move in, so I have been stuck a few streets back inland for the last decade :(



Yeah will do, stuck at work last night and tonight, but might get away early tomorrow and have another go... if Panstarrs hasn't moved too close to the horizon by tomorrow, will have to check CdC when I get home.
There was not much time on Fri between it becoming bright enough to photograph and it disapearing behind the salt haze and dust and smoke and crap on the horizon, so don't like my chances.

I bet the light pollution was at least a little bit better in '97 for Hale Bopp.

Yes .. there's really only a small window of 15 or so minutes. Each night has a few make or break moments and decisions :)

Nice colours Roger :thumbsup: A good remedy for wind is to weigh the tripod down with a bag of rocks.
