There be snakes about.... LOTS of em!

This monsoonal deluge in QLD has brought the snakes out big time - went for a quick drive to bed in some new brakes, and encountered 4 - one carpet snake crossing the road (A BIG ONE!), 1 metre long whip snake, and 2 x 3 foot browns. All in the space of about 1 km.

Nah, didn't run over any of them. :D

I remember when Browns were common around where I live in Maroubra. That was YEARS ago. I guess the rats ate them all...

Good you didn't squish 'em. Sadly I know too many people here who chase down possums here. Dead set! These people don't even grow a thorn bush for the possums to pee on.

I had a nice looking Tiger snake wandering around the garage last week.

He/she was about the 1.5m mark in length and eventually moved after realising there was no frog or mice to eat.

We had an adult carpet python on our outdoor table trying to escape the wet ground last week . We are fairly close to a reserve and creek. It was about 1.5m long and healthy. It had a brown diamond pattern.

I was under the impression that these snakes were placid but this one was very agressive. It was keen to strike when I got within 3m of it. When the Sun came out it eventually made its way back to the scrub.

I took this shot this morning. A couple of school kids walked passed my house and down the road with a red belly black hanging off a stick.
A casualty from the flood waters.

Good on you for not running over the ones you saw too. I like snakes. They have their place in our ecosystem and deserve to live as much as the warm and fuzzy ones.

Agree Netie - exactly what I posted on Facebook already.

I like snakes - just don't like them around the house with kids and cats though, so I try to move them along. Had a whip snake rise up about to strike at my then 3 year old - Mum moved SO fast and grabbed our bub it was like Superman!
