Alan Friedman's photos, taken from Buffalo, USA, are making the international press:

The Man With The Golden Sun (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/sci-tech/keen-eye-of-the-man-with-the-golden-sun-20130217-2el75.html)

They're pretty amazing images to be sure, but I've seen some damn good shots here on IIS, too. So come on guys and gals - let's show them that the ups and downs of the upside down sun from down under ... er ... looks just as good.

(And if I win Lotto, I'll have a go myself).

They made it to PetaPixel, too -- that's where I saw them.

Yeah I read this on the Sydney Morning Herald this morning - same article I imagine:

Tremendous pics that obviously hit the right amount of social media channels to make them something the press was interested in (anything is better than polls or Popes though ).

As you said RG, there are plenty of equally great shots on this little forum!

A good challenge would be to match his shot of Venus, captured during the day...

I am with astro_bot, there are people here on IIS who produce as good if not better, solar images, with all respect to the talented Alan Friedman, why couldn't the sydney morning herald write about home grown talent.

I'll answer my own question, it's probably because the twits who are the local science reporters can't be bothered to get off the news feeds on the Internet and go and look for a local story.

Alan's images are very nice. Yes there are a few of us that produce very nice images but Alan deserves all he gets. He is an unassuming man and well accomplished at his art. I have been in email contact with him for years and he has been most helpful with solar imaging ideas. Besides last year Peter and myself made so many papers with our images in the ROG competition. I think one of my images made 40 odd papers world wide during that time for my cycle 24 shot, so it's not like others of us don't make the papers.

Yep, I was floored as well...

There's a note at the bottom of the image...

My friends have been getting into me as to why I have not made the press - simple really - Alan's stuff is exceptional. Still a home grown solar snapper would have been a more interesting story here - there are some top notch imagers here!

Alan's work is exceptional. Yes others produce similar solar images, but it's his presentation which is a step above everyone else.
