D800 eats a Karina.

I'm not advocating cannibalism, but it must have been over a week since someone posted an image of NGC 3372 - so here's another one.
Gear - Unmodified D800, FSQ106, G11, PHD guiding via a DMK41 and ST-80.
23 x 4 minute subs at ISO 1600.
Pixinsight, for calibration and stretching - no de-noising at all, just a mild run of the dark structure enhance script.
The thumbnail image here is an insult to the hi res image, which is here:

So that's what 36.3 megapixels does in an FSQ? Impressive eh?

Now, imagine what a D800 could do modded?? Holy cow. I have an idea about turning a D800 into a super astro camera but it'd be an expensive experiment. You know it has 57% QE despite being one shot colour? That's almost the same as my FLI Proline at 60%.

Thanks Marcus - I've taken the CLS-CCD filter out of the train, and the star colours are much better, previously they were only blue or white.
I think (but should probably do some research first!) that the Nikon has a lower passband in the red end than the Canon, as it seems to do a better job of H-alpha than Canons. Of course, that is only a hypothesis based on the D800's ability to pick up plenty of red, and I'm happy for someone else to dig up the filter characteristics and prove me wrong.:)

So many stars! you've done great there. Add a Ha overlay and that would pop nicely. :)

After playing with the H-alpha channel, I realised that having smaller stars really helps improve the image as well, so I've reprocessed my original with a slight star erosion. It's hard to avoid losing detail in teh nebula, but it seems to make an improvement.
