NGC 6188 nebulae region in Norma (wall to wall nebula!)

Hi all :hi:

Here's a rather deep image showing part of the Norma Nebula centered on the NGC 6188 (RCW 108) nebula. The striking red background that fills most of the frame is nebula! In fact the only truly black background I could find on the image are some small dark lanes that run down to the bottom left of the image.

The image is a stack of 18 x 2-minute exposures (36-minutes total) @ ISO-400 with the modified Canon 300D at the 2-inch prime focus of my 12-inch f/5 GSO scope on GEM. Hand guiding done with 4.5" f/18 guidescope. Used the 2" Baader Coma Corrector and 2" Baader UV/IR Cut Filter.

Dark frame subtraction, bias and flat-fielded in Iris, processed in Photoshop, Noiseware.

This area of the sky would be an excellent target for all those ED80 owners out there, I think the entire nebula covers for than 3° of the sky.

M7 has a great background. You can miss it because you are after the cluster and expose for same..but I found thru the 80 x400 a wealth of structure by running longer than neede for the cluster and it looks good with the cluster there as well. er is it a cluster or a globular????

Definetly a good object for the ED80 - the nebula is at least 3-degree wide.

wonderful work and like Tony I will give it a go soon..though with an unmodded Canon it wont quite be the same :)

One of your nicest to date Paul, excellent!

I do however think you could get some darker regions to show if you tweeked the processing to be left with a less monochromaticaly red/orange image? Try adjusting the colour chanels using levels in photoshop. There is some nice dark dusty stuff along that Ha ridge that could be brought out in your image, I am sure...?

Great shot Paul. gee we think alike I was imaging very close to that area last night, getting NGC 6164-65 whick lies in the outer fringes of that nebula. The xtra red light sensitivity sure makes the difference when imaging red emission nebulae :)

In fact I think that this large nebula in Norma (NGC6188 etc) should have it's own name, like the "Tasmania Nebula" - it kinda looks like tasmania in wide field images (see http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=10335).

I'm sure if it were a northern sky object it would be called something like the californian nebula or north america nebula.
