Which way up for Jupiter?

I've posted this thread here, rather than in the Observational forum as the question has to do with the presentation of an image. And I'm sure this will gather as much debate as the ol' fall back Winter discussion on Omega/47 Tuc.

As I look through the Solar System Forum at images of Jupiter I see the mighy planet in all sorts of orientations. GRS at the top, GRS at the bottom, festoons sweeping to the east and festoons sweeping to the west. Now I'm aware that how the image ends up depends on the type of scope you are using and the image magnification system, but,...........What is the correct way up and which direction should the festoons be sweepiing (ie should the planet be seen sweeping from left to right or from right to left). Are there any international standard for this prickly question?

Example images. The first was taken with the 8" sct with a barlow (negative projection) and the second using eyepiece projection (positive projection)

my vote goes to having the GRS at the bottom. It just looks 'right' that way.

Yeah, I know. The GRS is up the top but I am too used to seeing it at the bottom in the EP and it just looks right!

Festoon diection???
They seem to look correct sweeping from the right to the left.

But that's just my vote :D

I prefer south at top, I don't know why. Partly because that's just the way it gets captured through my newt ;)

I like the GRS up top where it looks like cyclops eye... rather than down the bottom where it looks like one of those rotating clown heads mouths you stick ping pong balls down at the show ;)

I like the GRS at the top as well, but is there any sort of standard?
Also what about the festoons? Which way should they be pointing/moving?

I just posted the same question in another thread, before reading this one.
Clearly the appearance in the eyepiece will vary depending on the optical system you have and whether or not you're viewing straight through or with a diagonal. It would be good in a photographic forum to have all images with the same orientation for easy comparison. I've modelled my posted images on the format used on the ALPO site http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/~rhill/alpo/jupstuff/recobs.html with South at top and rotation going from right to left, festoons sweeping from left to right. Not sure if this is an official universal standard or just northerncentric chauvinism. We do know that they're all upside down up there and see their planets cross the sky from left to right.
At least adopting this standard would make this forum more useful to amateurs worldwide, most of whom live in the northern hemisphere. Does that sound like a cultural cringe?

Does it really matter which way up, or which way the festoons are going!

If I was going to use a 'Stanard' as you call it, I would have to suggest GRS at the bottom coz EVERY astronomy book I look at, the GRS is at the bottom! Images from Earth, from Pioneer spacecraft, Voyager spacecraft, Aust Sky & Tel mag, S&S mag, etc. etc. have GRS at the bottom.

And if you have a Standard on Joop, how about Saturn! Rings up or rings down?!!! All the publications I just checked show Saturn in both aspects.

Does it really matter. Can't we just enjoy looking at the pics instead of trying to Standardise everything.

I don't mind which way the image is when it is posted, who has the right to say which is the right way up. :P
