Can anyone recommend a camera repair shop to fix/replace the glass(?) over the camera sensor on my 550D? Don't ask me how it has happened but it looks like the glass as been scratched. The camera was ok when it was put into the camera bag a few months ago but now has a spot right in the middle of the image and what I thought was a hair on the right hand side of the image. I have used compressed air and a lens pen but they are still there. I have had a look at images I made 3 months ago they are not there.

I would be taking it to your local Canon service centre, in my opinion.

I spoke to our local canon service centre (250k away) over the phone. They claim that if the glass needs replacing they would not replace the glass and would have to send it away and could be gone for 2 to 3 months.

You could try this place, Sydney Camera Centre
They bailed me out when I modded a 30d and stuffed up the connections. Classic camera repair place

Having been dropping hints at them to get into the mod game...

Adrian,
Make sure you ask for an estimate.
If the camera is unmodded, consider sending it away O/S to http://www.spencerscamera.com/ and having it modded. Spencers charge about $300 for a basic conversion. You'll have to factor in freight. The mod will include a new filter to replace the scratched one.
This will be more expensive than getting the filter replaced by Canon but they will probably charge a fair chunk of the mod cost.

Just had a quote for $575 to replace sensor unit as the glass can not be replaced by itself. Is this right?
May as well buy a camera body and be done with it

I agree, just get another camera for that cost.

Here is part of the ail reply.
f we can clean the LPF successfully with out removing the sensor the price would be $70.00 (I still think this is the most likely scenario)
To remove the sensor and clean Cost of $200.00 Second most likely scenario.
To remove and replace the LPF and Sensor (Comes as a unit) Assemble adjust and check $575.00 This is the near worst case scenario.
But to verify any of the above scenarios I have to get it to Sydney.

Adrian,
If LPF and Sensor comes as a unit, why can they be modded - ie have the filter swapped for a clear glass or enhanced transmission filter.

It probably could but I don't really want to mod this camera. Maybe the 350D
