Boring old Crux

Hi Everyone,

I picked up another 135mm M42 lens at the local market. This one cost me $20. It is a TAMRON F2.8.

This is my first image with it: Crux.

It actually has a fair degree of chromatic aberation, but I have managed to reduce it with some processing. This is really just a test and I haven't applied a flat field as yet.

Canon 300D, ISO800, 30x30sec.

I would like to get an adapter to allow me to use the old Pentax primes on my 20d, as far as I can tell it should be for the M42 screw type mount - is this correct? Any particular source for such things you would care to recommend? Which lenses can/cannot be used - are there are some that will not focus to infinity for example or can I assume if it fits it will work? I know some lenses have automatic appature closure - these will end up wide open unless the relevant lever is actuated (I guess that could be taped/glued/removed?).

Seems like a good way to get reasonable quality glass for fewer $$$. Anything else I need to know?

Hi John,

Yep, all the things you mentioned are considerations when using old lenses on an EOS. I picked up my adapter on ebay. Just do a search using "m42 to canon eos". Be careful though, The "buy it now" prices vary widely as does the postage cost. I ended up paying $AUD22.00 including postage. The adapter arrived about a week later and it works really well. I checked things out locally and when I did find someone who knew what I was talking about, it was going to cost over $100 and it would take 4 weeks to be imported.

My experience so far has been that if it fits it will reach focus. Of course aperture and focus are all manual. One of the lenses I use had a pin mechanisim to actuate the Diaphram. It was pretty easy to disable it.

So if you do have some quality glass with M42 screw mounts this is a cheap way to use them.

Very handy unit, probably just right for comets maybe? I recon with a little experimentation you will bring it up a level but you still have to be happy with the shot really.

I have followed this path - my adapter cost $13.50 again ebay and I had to put cash in an envelope and send it to a PO box in London - the adapter arriced 2 weeks later from China (of course). I have now obtained a 55 f1.8 SMC pentax lens for $50 and it seems to be good - have not tried it out on astro yet. Hope to do that this w/e. I have found you need to insulate the adapter to preven Err 01 occuring on the camera, and of course for daytime use you must choose manual or appature priority. Looks like a good way to get good glass for less, hunting for an f3.5 135mm zeiss or pentax next...
