Can someone point me in the direction of how to check the set up of my laptop screen for correct colour management so my image processing is colour accurate. I have googled and look through the articles section but no luck.
Thanks.

Spyder.
Cheap enough. See if you can borrow one though.

As a first step, run the inbuilt calibration tools in Windows 7/8 or in OSX

I would be wary of getting a Spyder, if you do, check the Spyder calibration, they have an appalling quality record, We have had as many as 2 out of 3 be out of calibration.
We stopped using them at work and now use the i1, much much much better product.

If you do get a spyder, have it checked against a known calibrated source.
If you want something cheaper, check out the X-Rite ColorMunki Smile

In the good old days of colour film, We used an 18% grey card to calibrate our equipment. So get an 18% grey card, take a digital photo in 5000K light then match the image to the card & screen.

This is not helping correct gamma and other colour inconsistency with computer display though. But will help greyscale a bit.
Best is ccd calibration device like i1.
$100 is good investment for calibration.
