Hi All,

Finally some decent weather around the New Moon arrived and I drove to Wilsons Promontory for a night of imaging. It was clear and seeing beautiful blue bioluminescence kept me awake all night. It was quite strong visually with blue surf and some sparkle around my feet when walking in the water.

The time lapse is here:
http://vimeo.com/terrastro/liquidlight

After I mixed the bioluminescence footage with Aurora shots from October last year it reminded me one of those psychedelic light shows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_light_show) from the 70s so I named it "Liquid light show".

Some images attached. Larger versions and a Virtual Reality Tour in my blog: http://www.terrastro.com/galleries/liquid-light-show/

Cheers,
Alex

That's a fantastic put together Alex. Wonderful.

What type of fisheye lens was that at the end?

Greg.

Thanks guys for the comments!

It's a 3d software pan using full 360 panorama. I made the panorama with Sony NEX5N and Samyang 8mm f/2.8 fisheye (2 rows x 6 images each)

Totally loved watching the TL. Was very entertaining all round and the incorporation of music into the different scenes really topped it off .

Beautiful, Alex. The 360 VR tour at the end of the video really caps it off. Unique!

Thanks Alex. I was just checking out a review of the 8mm F2.8 Samyang. It also comes in a Fuji X mount form. Fisheyes are a touchy lens in my opinion. This one looks good as the curvature isn't too much. Often they are.

Greg.

hi Alex

Amazing.. I'm surprised to see bioluminescence that strong at Wilsons Prom. Well done on finding it (twice!).

Bioluminescence is starting to kick off in the Gippsland Lakes again. See this report:

http://www.water.vic.gov.au/environment/algae/gippsland-lakes-algae-weekly-update

The problem is that it is really temperamental. Some evenings nothing, others not bad (nothing like early 2009 though). One patch of water can have it, but there might be nothing 500 metres away. And it's often strongest in calm water but then you have to disturb the water yourself to see it, which is hard to make look good in photos. On Friday morning there was a strong 20-30 knot south-westerly change through the Lakes which has churned everything up so may be a few days before it builds up again.

We had fun paddling a canoe in some quite bright bits one night earlier this week, but there was nothing on the beach at our mainsite so I didn't get any photos. Got a few from Wednesday night which I'll look at when I've finished unpacking..

Outstanding work again Alex. Are you batch processing each frame out of the camera in post or are these images straight out and into the sequence with no post?

Awesome work once again Alex. Congrats on the capture and the video looks great. I agree with others on that last 360 sequence. Brilliant.

You have probably already seen that Colin managed to get bioluminescence and aurora at the same time from Wilsons Prom as well on Thursday night. Must make it down there myself one night.......

Hi Alex

You dropping your standards a bit...NO AURORA ..although I see you have introduced some colour via the Bioluminescence.

Great images as usual.

Beautiful as always, Alex. Amazing that we were both there that Thursday night shooting from different beaches. Were you there for that one night or others? I was there Friday as well, but a cool change arrived around 5pm with southerlies and the chop killed off the bioluminescence. Seems the best conditions are hot with light northerlies to hold up the waves. Btw, I saw some bioluminescence at Gibson steps as well. Not as strong as the Prom, but enough to give the waves a blue tinge.

The Samyang is quite good - minimal CA up to 85% of the frame then it becomes bothersome but still better than any fisheye I tried to date. It is very compact and exceptionally well made - reminds me of older Pentax lenses.

Thanks, Paul. I batch process in Nikon Capture NX2 when I convert from RAW to jpeg.

It is amazing, given that normally we are 3300 kms apart :). I was there just just Thursday night and then drove home in the morning.
