Joe,
The Canberra society meet at Stromlo regulary (once a month) and the cotter is another quiet dark spot. Not too sure about the north side

Thanks Vaz - I am joining the CAS next week but will miss the first meeting - Would be nicer if there were somewhere on my side but hey, it's not like Canberra's a big place! ha ha
It's been a long time since I lived in Canberra but what about somewhere like Sutton?

I'm still yet to make it to a CAS meet despite being a member. Will get to one, one day. Too busy dealing with my own observatory woe's at night time to head out.
As for observing spots, you could probably find somewhere good out Coppins Crossing or even passed hall towards m'bateman..

It's a long time since I lived in Canberra, but there used to be a good dark picnic area on the lefthand side of the road from the Cotter towards Tidbinbilla. Plenty of space for half a dozen cars and scopes. The tracking station was over the next hill so at night you may hear some rumbling as the antennas are slewed.
Alternatively on the escarpment along the west side of Lake George there are some spots, passing traffic is negligible (get away from the highway).
