There is a group of IIS'ers who enjoy their RC choppers, so I thought i'd share our first flight expierence.

The helicopter shown below was a Birthday/Xmas gift. As mentioned in another thread, I am not really into RC but our six year old Boy's enthusiasm could not be contained any longer. This afternoon it was taken to the local footy oval for its first flight.

I was way too timid when trying get the bird to take off and the Boy thought he could do better. He thinks he knows everything at the moment, so I handed the remote to him and let him go for it.

'Don't be upset if crashes, we can get spares,' were my last droplets of wisdom.

He proceeds to give it the berries and the chopper is flying high. Too high. Next he cuts the power and the ground is rushing up to the chopper.

'Full power,' I yell.

He saves it just in time, flies for another 30 seconds and then manages to land it on its skids.

Mum was taking video and looking after our toddler.

'See Mum, I do know everything,' says the Boy. :tasdevil:

He then starts giving me a lesson in how to fly the helicopter. I took off and was going ok until it drifted off and I parked it in a tree. Luckily it was fine and I let the Boy carry on until the batteries ran out.

Good fun but i'm not an RC convert. Maybe I don't have a pulse. The helicopter now belongs to my Son.

Hi Stu,
Welcome to "The fright Flight Club."

Those co-axials don't like the wind, but then neither does mine.

I just bought a 4 channel, Double Horse 9116 & am in the throws (no pun intended) of try to get it to the hover without hitting anything.

They say that it's like trying to balance a marble on a basketball but I reckon it's t'other way around.
;)

It's the 1st, 2nd & 3rd dimension (all at once) that's the hard part to learn to control.

You have to be very quick & very gentle on the sticks.

Gimme my yachts anyday.

Regs, L..

Thanks Raj, yachts sound a lot more relaxing.

Attached is a photo from yesterday. I think I can read his mind ....... Mmmm, How can I make Dad fly away?

Must admit - I bought one of these things from Dick Smith's for $40 before x-mas while being egged on by a colleague. The kids and I have had a great time jeopardizing the pavlova, crashing into everything, frequently getting it 'stuck' on the ceiling. I think all of us have 'worn' it accidentally a few times now - but the entertainment is well worth the money. So far, the cost has been a new 'fly-bar' ($6), and the discovery that paperclip wire is the right gauge to make replacement pins for the rotor.
Yee haaa!
Andrew.

Haha fancy seeing RC Helicopters a topic on IIS...

I am frequently on HeliFreak and arcHeli at the same time as IIS and am a member of the Namadgi Sports Flyers Club at Williamsdale.

Have always had a keen RC interest (apart from boats as I cannot swim).

Currently flying a Trex 700E V2, Blade 450x, Blade 130x and an Sbach 342.

Hi Stu,

The one you got looks the same as the one I got for my son as well. Jaycar model although I got mine elsewhere.

They fly well my son is 14 and still getting used to it although it can handle the knocks well.

Ive had to modify my sons already and found a Chinese dry joint in the remote control but when I complete the final mod I think it will do really well for a first goer.

I will be working with my son on a quad-copter in the future though.

Thanks for the info. My Son is keen so this will be helpful.

Sounds like you are having as much fun as your Kids. I have not been hooked but am happy to supervise and take lessons from my Boy.

That explains your avatar name.

Gotta love the quality control that comes out of some Chinese factories. I've had to fix some toys that have had a similar problem.

Haha in more ways than one.. It was originally due to my big ears, and then having a Wingnut nearly take my eye out on a buffing wheel and now, I am crazy for astro and RC :D

Sams Warehouse was selling the last ones they had For $9.90 each ehre, so naturally I grabbed one.

It royally annoys the cat... a not so undesireable side affect after the little cow wakes me at 4am every day to be fed :)
