I have noticed there are quite a few of us that live in the Sunshine Coast area and are looking for a dark site to take the scopes for a night of viewing or imaging.

It is well worth taking the long trip out to dark skies but sometimes the long trip can be a little too much so I thought I might share some of the dark sites I have found that are only a short drive from heavy light polluted populated areas.

Some of these sites are in public access areas but privately owned eg. (government/forestry/water etc) some of these sites are at public lookouts but have areas to set up away from others.

I have posted photos of the sites I have used from google earth showing the area marked in a red box other photos show access and light pollution.

It is advisable to check out these sites in daylight before taking your gear at night to be sure access is still available as circumstances can change also be aware of your safety when viewing in remote public areas.

I hope others can also post a reply here and share dark sites they have found in the Sunshine Coast area and perhaps several can arrange to meet up and share a night of viewing at these and other spots.

Thanks for looking.

Nothing wrong with Cambroon Ron I love it out there, wish I could get there more often to visit you, you have the best dark skies locally I believe, well worth the effort good dark sky and good company. These places are only 5 to 10 mins drive from my place where your place is about 45 to 50mins drive. If any locals near me need a quick dark place I think these are ok, but I believe locally you can't beat Cambroon.

Nice article Wayne. Thanks for posting.
Ron’s place is superb. Dark, safe and good company. But, it is a bit of a drive for me too. Somewhere closer for a spur of the moment session would be good.
Thinking cap on.....
