Within the next month or two I would like to travel somewhere out of Melbourne (not too far) to get a better view of the Night Sky since I have light pollution in the area. I plan to bring my DSLR to get a time lapse as well as my scope for some astrophotography (I will have a CCD by then).
Can anyone recommend any good locations just outside of Melbourne?
Thanks!!

The hills on the south east side of Lake Eildon,
If you want wide-field and low horizon, on top of Mt Buffalo, several spot to choose from and its very dark in all directions, far enough from Melbourne not to be troubled by light pollution.
Also there's a nice sheltered spot on a quarry at Harrietville, left hand side of the road, past the bridge over the river about 22 km west of Bright.

The compromise is to join the ASV and get access to their Leon Mow Dark Sky Site up at Heathcote

Hi Stefan,
I have been holding sessions at my place at kinglake which has relative dark skies (darker than melb.) and have 1 organised for this sat night (22/12) and a BBQ, providing the weather holds and the clouds take a holiday. check out this thread here (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=93338) if you are interested.
Cheers
