EQ6 holding capacity

Hi guys.

How much can an EQ6 hold?

Just thinking of in the future, could it hold a C11 or C14, or a 12" or 16" truss newt?

If not, what mount could hold those?

the eq6 will hold 20kg very well, and maybe up to 25KG, I have had the c8, the ED80 and the M500 all on the mount at the same time with the canon camera, 2 2" WO diagonals, 1 17" nagler and a 24MM 2" ultrawide Meade EP, 50mm finder scope and 3 5kg weights. I would not reccommend a large scope over 10" newt, as the wind would buffet it too much, and it wont dampen out shakes too quickly.

G11 will hold the C11/14 np. Probably the 12" newt, though consider the lever arm problem. A 16 inch newt might need to go onto a Titan :eek: Not so much the weight, though that will be substantial, more the lever arm again.

I'm hoping Nightshift will by some rings for that new little red corvette he has so I can see how it goes on my G11.

Ive got a C11 (13KGs) on an EQ6 definitely the upper limit once you start adding bits and pieces, thinking a G11 upgrade will be needed for imaging.

I wouldnt like to try anything larger than a 10" in a newt.

A Titan etc. would be nice but need to consider A) cost :scared: B) portability :D

Hi Mike,

You also need to consider, is the mount going to be out in the open or in a enclosed dome or roll off roof type shelter. The dome will give the most protection. Roll off roof type shed will give less protection, unless you have really high walls, or walls that fold down away from the wind.

I use to mount my 16" f4.5 with 8" SCT Celestron on Goliath mount with no problems. But that is inside an observatory.

It probably wouldn't hold your standard truss dob ving but if you check out Mark Hodsons 12" truss on an eq6 (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=65&highlight=mhodson) (second post) you can see the difference.

Once you start looking at scopes over the C11 size the mounts needed are extreme such as the Titan or even a lot better the Paramount plus others.

The G11 is great value but anything up from this your really paying big dollars.

The G11 is rated about the same handling weight as the EQ6 but it can take slightly more weight then the EQ6.

I know Bird has put a 13" Newt on his G11 but if your panning on putting Guide scopes and plenty of other accessories needed for DSO's and guiding then 13" is way to big.

Come on Mike....come to the dark side....get that DSLR working on some DSO's.

my $0.02's worth.
The G-11 will hold a 10" or 12" newt. and as has been pointed out, maybe a 13" (Bird).
BUT....... as far as I can see Bird only has a webcam (OK a flash webcam) on his. Start plonking a guidescope, and imaging system on as well, and the weight packs on.
I myself have used my 10" newt on a G-11, an EM200, and now an AP600E. All worked, but the one thing that has made a difference is the carbon fiber tube lately, reducing the OTA weight from around 14 kilos to about 10.
Don't forget the tube rings as well, and in my case (Vixen) they are very substantial/heavy.
A truss tube may help, but the ServoCat is looking better every day.

Paramount Me can hold up to 50kgs aprox, and the Meade Max, up to 200kgs aprox, personally if i had the kinda money to buy myself a high end Losmandy Mount, i would just save 40% more and get myself eather the Meade Max or the Paramount Me, cause with one of those mounts, they blow the Losmandy away, plus youll never have to buy another mount again. but, i dont have that kinda money. same thoughts as h0ughy most likey..

for the Losmany theres an extra $3,500 for the gemini computerized goto

The G11 is advertised as $5000 with the Gemini. http://www.atscope.com.au/g11.html (though Peter Ward may not have updated the price for the new Level 4 Gemini)
Gemini is used to be around $1500 extra for the GM8. That new price is crazy when you can get it from OPT to here for about half the price. I can't see how he will sell the Gemini for $3500, even if it comes with a palm pilot (which it doesn't).

The Titan should come standard with the Level 3 Gemini.

Mike forget the Gemini. Get some encoders and a AN. Then you can use computer guidance either setup as a dob or setup for imaging on a EQ (Losmandy or whatever)

I'm just waiting for some final prices on an aluminium SRM which would take up to an 18" telescope!!
With Bartels computer drive and GOTO probably less than $3000 all up.
Could be a viable option!!!!
