After seeing a thread started by Ving (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?p=116359#post116359) I realised that there are others who share my fetish for watches. I have several, most of which aren't working due to flat batteries, including a couple of fairly expensive Citizen models, but I still get that "have to have" feeling when I see one that takes my fancy. High on my wish list is a moon and tide calculator by Casio (a must have for fishing!!). So are you a sucker for a good watch and how many do you have.??

This poll is discriminatory, I don't own a watch. :P

There is a serious flaw in your sampling method! I have 2 - one for work and one for casual, but your categories don't allow for that (or those with a little more variety!!)

This is the best watch in the world (IMO :D ;) ).
Casio PRS-400 (http://www.casiowatches.com.au/prod_PROTREK%20&%20FISHING%20GEAR.html#prodDetails3 )

I think this is the one you're refering to Phil.

It's classed as a fishing watch but it's ideal for astronomy. Check out the features.
I saw a review in S&T and tracked it down locally, approx $130

It's the only one I need, although I do have 3 watches

I'm with you Phil, I can't resist a good watch.

Hey, that's my watch!

Yes, it is pretty good, tells you sunset and sunrise, moon age and phase (mind you, the moon usually tells me that), plus all the usual digital bells and whistles like stop watch and alarms, day and date, etc.

As for the fishing aspect, this is the best part. I can personally vouch for the fact that no matter how pathetic a fisherman you are, you will definitely catch fish if you go fishing when the watch tells you to.

OK..lets see...

As far as clocks go, I have the one on my wrist, two in the car that tell different time, one on my home computer and one on the work computer, one in my electronic address book, a sidereal clock and two sundials in the garden, oh and the cat who jumps on my bed at 4:30am every morning.

So that makes 10.

Peter.

If I really really really need to know the time, and that is rarely, I just ask someone with a mobile phone

Phil, clearly in your skewed idea of a universe everyone must have at least one watch! Well like Paul, I don't have one either. Haven't had one for many years. I forget how many. I don't have a calendar either. :P

I actually dug a few holes around the back yard and stuck a few rocks into them. At least I know when the solstice is.

Thanks, it just becomes a real hassle trying to time occultations.
Remind me to wring the neck of the nextdoor neighbours rooster.

Oh, BTW I have 6 watches in the bedside table drawer, one on my wrist, one on the DVD player, one on the VCR, a kitchen clock, a radio clock, one on the weather station, one on the computer, one on the laptop, one on the stove, one on the microwave and one on my PDA/mobile. And not one of them is reading the same!

Tricky poll on two counts, I have 2 and neither work.

In both cases the battery died and I never got round to replacing them - the last one was 30 years ago.

At least they are both right twice a day (sorry had to say it :P)

Congrats on the 2K Andrew.

I've got several watches but try not to wear one unless absolutely neessary...

The real question is when did you "buy" your last watch...I don't think I have ever purchased a watch but I have received as gifts all of them I currently own...

No watch for me either....I don't have time to wear one.

:eyepop:My grandfather (in-law) recently passed away..He was a jeweller...i was in his office when they were going through his stuff and chucking most of it out...in the chuck out pile i salvaged a shoe box full of old watches without bands...some were just junk...but to my horror, i also found about 10 old looking ones, apon closer inspection they were rolex..some of them even still tcked when ya wound them up...i couldn't believe thewy were destined for the tip...simply because no-one knew what they were...but ive watched enough american tv to know that they are expensive...lol...:eyepop:

Hi all,

Same as Ving, use to wear a watch all the time now the mobile phone has replaced it.

So do you strap it to your wrist or do you have a velcro pad surgically imbedded into the back of your wrist:shrug:

I have 3 watches. Two for refereeing and one for work. Don't know why I wear one for work as the bell at the end of each period lets me know what time it is : )

Havent worn a watch since i was about 10 years old.
Having a mobile phone hanging off me for 10 to 12 hrs a day for work is my watch, calender, memo reminder ,alarm clock etc.
Then when i get home the microwave is my watch.
But the only problem is everytime i go to scratch my head i knock myself out!

Hmm, 4x watches, all flat batteries or broken,(even a gold dress watch).. no clocks on my walls..
Dont watch the time unless it has to do with tv programmes and then i see that on my pc so that has a clock..
oh and my phone has a clock...
but i have learned the difference between night and day...
day, i can only see one star, night i can see many....lol...

I am a watch freak, I admit. my first watch I bought in Singapore in 1966 and it is still on my wrist - its a Rolex. If that wasn't enough, wife gets me a Omega 20 years ago. Still perfect. Then last year I went really crazy and bought a cheapo Seiko, followed by another fancy one. That was good until I passed this Swiss watch shop in town. Being a mechanical Engineer, I had to have mechanicals. I am now the proud owner of two Oris watches - one a big square one with leather strap, and then (couldnt resist) an "Artellier Complication" which has a moon dial. Sometimes I get a bit worried when I set moon to what magazine says, only to discover that we can't see the new moon when it is official new moon - only 2-3 days later. But my watch is correct - just wait till full moon and there it is on my wrist. All goes to show that watches and astronomy are linked together - otherwise why would we still be using things called "Light Years"?
