Clavius region

Hi there!

I am still going through the AVIs taken at the end of November. Here is an image of the Clavius region.

SW Dobs 10"
DMK41
TV Powermate x2.5

Seeing 3/5 Transparency 6/10

The AVI was stacked in Autostakkert 2, wavelets were applied in Registax6, levels adjusted in GIMP 2.8

Wow! Such detail.

It's strange how so many of us complain about the moon when its glare stops us from seeing DSOs, etc, but it is such a fascinating subject in itself.

John, I have only been imaging since May and I can't get enough of the Moon, to the point that I haven't yet moved to the planets. There are literally 100s of features to be imaged with relatively modest equipments; enough to keep us busy fo a long time! Plus it's great practice before moving to "more advanced" imaging.

Thanks Nick for the compliment. I have a modest equipment (all up costing under $2500 so far). The Moon is a great subject that doesn't require 1000s of dollars for pleasing results.

I have found that looking at your recent Moon shots reminds me of looking at 2D maps through stereoscopes to give a 3D effect. When I focus on one area of the photo the surrounding zones seem to be a little out of focus. This is not a criticism as I know that your photos are in focus but it is an interesting effect. I assume this is the result of stacking multiple images.....

Do you see the same thing in your images?

Thanks Dave and this may be due to couple of things.

Firstly, the seeing conditions when have shot the AVis have never been great. At best, the seing is around 6 or 6.5/10, which means that the data isn't top quality to start with. A lot of work is done during the processing,so the focus is really artificial. Another explanation may be the perspective. Imaging around the edge of the lunar disc may induce some lost of focus between the object of interest (eg Clavius) and the "horizon". Just some thoughts, I am not sure there is any validity in this.

It is an interesting effect and it works in your favour. There is so much going on that each feature can be studied in detail and that might have something to with it. Keep 'em coming.
