well just 21 days left till this very rare event. It only happens every 26,000 years. It could be the end of the world??? What are your predictions?

Don't tell me that! I'm just watching "2012" on TV!

Hi Laurie,

That would have to be nearly the worst movie ever made. No one is that lucky to get away at the very last second that many times. :D

Quite true, Peter:lol:

How riveting was that movie, I was asleep within 10 minutes of starting to watch that. :P

As for predictions, we'll still be here on the 22nd.

Interesting that the world survived the last time, 26,000 years ago. Maybe it's due to the Mayans not being there at the time to lead to the prediction.

Cheers

An extract from Bigpond 'News' (Bit of a stretch calling the service they provide news).

According to the ancient Mayan calendar the end of the world will fall upon us on December 21, and one shop in the Siberian town of Tomsk is cashing in.
The wedding salon is selling Apocalypse kits containing a bottle of vodka labelled 'Live vodka', a tin can of sardines, a box of matches, some candles, a piece of soap, a length of rope, various medicines, a bandage and a notebook, labelled 'Notes to the Future'.

I guess the rope and notepaper is their backup plan for when the vodka runs out. They really have thought of everything...

Sure was Al.

"Can't stop the Music" with the Village People. :scared:

I saw it at the cinema in the 80's with my Nan & Auntie, they insisted on singing along to all the songs. There was nowhere for me to hide.:scared3:

I'm mentally scarred as a result and still receiving therapy to this day. ;) :D

I'm going to do something I haven't yet, get stone blind drunk as I know I won't have to deal with the hangover! How cool is that!! :D

This alignment with the galaxy center is a funny one. People didn't know we align with the galactic center about the same time every year.

Bad science. Hilariously funny. Shame the cricket ran overtime and the PVR missed the last few minutes. Does Tamara get out alive?

The movie was so bad, I can't remember who got out!

The significance this time around is that (ostensibly) the alignment happens on the date of the (southern) summer solstice. This indeed only happens once every 26,000 years.
However, I used the discounting term 'ostensibly' because to my understanding the alignment was closest back in 1998.

The tsunami of dgaf washing over me at this juncture in time precludes me from elaborating further.

ok, so maybe one more nibble at it.....

Also, I think it needs to be said that the Mayans didn't conflate this celestial alignment with the end of the world. To my understanding it might be more accurately translated as the end of a cycle or period.

Looking at the world today it is hard to argue against us being witness to cultural point of inflection.
We live in interesting times to be sure.

Caveat: At any point in history preceding us, our ancestors might have made the same claim.

Actually... come to think of it.
Justin Bieber surely must be the result of an unholy coupling of Quetzalcoatl and the dude in the skin tight red lycra gimp suit and plastic horns featured in many a theistic tome ... so there might be something in this after all.

Funny Brendan. See http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/faqcalcmove.shtml for the explanation of the web page change. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/#declination is the replacement page for declination.

I still prefer GA's web page (http://www.ga.gov.au/oracle/geomag/agrfform.jsp) for Australian values.

For our part in FNQ, we plan a beach party, complete with a set of Floaties each, just in case :-) A telescope of course so we can see Nibaru as it looms suddenly out of the darkness. And our tin foil hats of course :-)
JJJ were way too early with their prediction of the end of the World last Friday, WE knew it would not happen until the 21st :eyepop: !!!

Damn!..... &%$%&. Just realised the 21st falls on a Friday.
I gotta' work all week then they gonna' end the world. I would have liked to have the "End of The World" on a Monday.

Are all these earthquakes anything to do with the gravity pulls? Like starting to pull the Earth apart. It seems to be happening.
I'll be sure to wish everyone a nice Christmas wish early this year.

Oh, by the way, is the 21st USA 21st or is it Australian 21st? If its USA then we have the ending on the 22nd.
Something just is not right.

Where's my vodka stash?:)

Cheers

Does this mean I won't get my annual leave this year? My last day at work is the 21st.
Hope last day isn't a premonition 😳

I start a new job on January 2nd. Last day in my current role is next Friday (21st). I'm on the Perth to Adelaide flight on Friday evening... maybe I'll get a bird's eye view of the event?

They're having a "Not the End of the World" star party at the University of Texas Arlington Dec 21 19:00 MST. I've asked how they are going to manage that as by that time in the US it is already Dec 22 for most of the world.

Maybe we should have a few in NZ and Oz at our local 19:00. That's 15-20 hours earlier depending on timezone.

If it really happens we won't have 23 people for pre-Xmas lunch on the 22nd.

OICURMT

Probably USA time, as the Mayans were in Central America and they shared the same timezone... :)

Specifically, Mountain Standard Time.

Jokes aside, for approximately 150,000 people on earth the 21st December will be their last living day on earth. This being the current world daily mortality rate.

I just had to do a blog post on my AskTheScienceGuru (http://www.askthescienceguru.com/21st-december-2012-and-the-future) site on this one !
It's a shame that so many people believe that something bad (more than usual) is going to happen on the 21st.
When in fact the Mayan predictions themselves are for a POSITIVE transformation and the return of Their Wise Men, in effect their own second coming !

i was just looking at stellarium. The sun is actually closer to the lagoon nebula on the 22nd december not the 21st.
