Canon T ring fault

One day I will get around to doing some astrophotos. Not much done in the past year since obtaining my 50D. One problem I have is that the T ring that fits to my 2" adaptor will not lock properly. The detent is to big and rounded, so that the lens does not lock in position. It can easily be turned without pressing the release. I bought this T ring on ebay some time back and it came in a celestron box. I am now thinking that someone disposed of it because of this very problem.

Question 1 is - What is the best brand of T ring for the Canon EOS if I buy another, or have I just got a bad Celestron one?

Question 2 is -can anybody suggest a repair? I am fairly sure this thing is aluminium so I cannot solder or braze the detent and then re-drill.

thanks for any replies

Hi John,

They are not expensive, you should just pick up a new one. I bought an EOS T-Ring from Bintel a few months ago for ~$35 which is very solid and fits well.

Cheers,
Mark

John,

I purchased a Meade T ring and another from Bintel. Both were good but still showing signs of slop.

To fix the slop, I wrapped about 4 layers of teflon tape around the bayonet and adjusted the amount of layers until the fit was solid but not too tight.

Hi John,
I bought a Celestron like yours and have found the same thing.
The cutout is just too big and rounded.
I have since bought the Meade and found it a lot better.
Good tight fit and no problems so far.

Ken.

Thanks Darrin, I might try the teflon tape trick - I was using electrical tape but it is too thick.

Thanks Ken, seems that Celestron does have a problem with the design.

I may end up buying the meade or bintel. Think I will take the camera in and try the T ring in the shop.

You could try filling it with metal epoxy..and re-drilling?
