Respraying an OTA

Anyone ever try respray a TAK OTA ?

I recently aquired a used TAK FS-128.

I needed to remove a Telrad base that was stuck on with double sided tape that was obstructing the use of a top dovetail plate to mount on top of the rings.

Despite being VERY careful when removing the telrad it peeled some paint off the OTA.

Its no big deal and hidden under the top mounted losmandy plate.

Despite this I know its going to bug me and want to consider getting the whole OTA resprayed in 2 pac enamel by a panel beater.

Anyone done this ? How dangerous is it removing focuser and lens cell from a TAK OTA ? I dont wont to destroy collimation and have to ship it somewhere to sort it out.

Advice needed. Thanks.

what a bugger !!!!

if you ever take a telrad base of or anything with double sided tape my best advise is use a credit card edge and just rub it.it slowly starts to peel back.

can't help with paint!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This old link from Cloudy Nights might be useful. Lot's of info on restoring and repainting classic scopes.

If you want to respray the whole scope in 2 pak, it,the scope will have to be stripped to bare metal, as the 2 pak will probably dissolve the original coating.

Tak paint is touchy stuff and chips off very easily, you would still have the same problem, if not worse covering the original.

I wouldn't even consider taking it anywhere to be resprayed, but that is your call i suppose.

A couple of drops of emu oil and a bit of patience and it would have dropped off without mechanical aid.
I think you're asking for trouble - just touch it up with some spray and put it down to experience.

You can purchase Takahashi touch up paint, identical in colour to the original paint, I presume you have to lime green scope.

I agree with many of the above posts.
You are annoyed about this minor imperfection now, but this annoyance will fade with time.
I took a big chip out of my AP130 about 17 years ago. I was upset at the time, but lived with it as I wanted to use the scope more than have it looking nice.
I now really never even think about it, though I may repaint it one day to its as new condition, along with fitting a feathertouch focuser

Will buy touch up paint And enjoy using it.

No need to rush into it now.
