Talking Suzy In The Sky With Diamonds.

Quote:
Astronomers have decided to call the star "Lucy" after the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
Okay, so it's supposed to be Lucy... semantics! Suzy sounds better though .

I just want one carat, one measly itsy bitsy carrat from that 10 billion trillion trillion carrats.

I'll never be able to observe another globular cluster (which are filled with white dwarfs) in the say way again. Ah-ah, all I'll see are $$$$$ signs.

And whenever I refer to clusters in my obs. reports looking like crushed diamonds, I was never ever ever ever wrong.

Wish I had a really fast rocket ship...

Pretty much every white dwarf of the right age and composition will essentially be diamond like in its core. Over time, the entire star will crystallise out except for their very outer layers. So Suzy, start looking, there's plenty of them out there!!!

Mind you, they'd be essentially worthless. You'd have so much diamond, the market couldn't handle it all and would collapse. They'd be cheaper than chips

Seen that one before Suzy, wouldn't mind a chunk of that as well.

But if that fell to Earth, you all might as well chuck out your diamonds, they would be worthless

Omega Centauri & 47 Tuc, would they be about the right age to have diamonds? What would be the right age?
Carl.

You would have to be smart and hide it away and drip feed the market then it could be a very healthy monthly income

Carl.
It all really depends on the cooling rate of the white dwarf, which is well known for various sizes of dwarf and composition. Your average white dwarf will cool down to the right temperature (8000-10000K) for the interior to change phase and start to crystallise out in a few billion years (around 2 billion is the accepted time). Most globs whose stars have white dwarf ages of around 2 billion years will start to have these remnants begin to crystallise out. The globs orbiting our galaxy are more than old enough to have some of their white dwarfs developing diamond cores.

Carl.

I really appreciate the knowledge that you share here.
It would be sad if you were not around, I wouldn't learn as much. You help so many people with your knowledgeable posts.
