Dust around NGC 3576

This is really a re-pro.

Pushed the data beyond reasonable limits to show the ugly bits of noise etc. but there were some nice surprises too!

Yeah I remember that one. The brown dust really sticks out of the Ha neb. Nice.

I am imaging this one at the moment. A very interesting area.

Interesting to see the dust there, but the brown is a bit depressing... Next thing, H will be calling this a low contrast HDR image!

Can you post a link to one with a bit "blacker" background for comparison? I'd like to see how the target nebulosity "isolates" from the background.

I suspect the brownish tinge is accurate, as the dust would indeed redden any transmitted light. David Malin waxes lyrical about this sort of thing
in many of his books

I could psuedo colour it, but what would be the point? The original (darker background) version from a year or so ago is here

Thanks for posting the comparison image.

I'm not denying the brown dust's existence, but see it a bit like atmospheric haze that ruins distant landscape shots. Personally, I don't think it adds to the picture and I prefer your original version, not just for the darker background, but for the better contrast that helps demonstrates the dust lanes. Also, I think the new version has less contrast/definition in the core of the nebulosity.

I'm thinking I might have to properly reprocess the data using
the technique described by Jay G'bany in a recent S&T.... given the storms that are predicted to hit Sydney tonight...maybe not a bad idea

Hmmm, I reckon I like the original more. I like the vibrancy of this new one but I like the brownish tones in the background of the original. Not sure about the magneta pink in the new one either. Any chance of something inbetween?

Original one takes my vote Peter. This one certainly shows the dust but the colour is scarry.

I like the repro "warts and all".
It just shows a lot and might even be a true representation of what is out there (who knows).
