Het Evoluon

I am from Dutch origin and for some reason a memory popped into my mind that got me searching on Google.
Back in the Netherlands we had ( 'have' I thought) a science hands on museum called "het Evoluon". A bit like SciTech here in Perth, but bigger.
I was very disappointed that is has been shut down and converted into a Conference center. I'm sure it has been surpassed, but this building was something else and my experiences there were something that has stuck with me for years!

So for those of you who are interested in Architecture, Phillips ( the company and the man) and Nostalgia( for those of you who are Dutch or of Dutch origin) here is a link to a site that is dedicated to keeping the flying saucer alive!

http://www.evoluon.org/

Tot hoors!

This one

I remember reading about it as a kid back in late '50-ies in one of magazines for popularisation of science !! :-)
Interestingly, the website is mentioning this design being done in '68 in Finland but I am VERY sure I was reading that article well before that, and New Zealand was mentioned.. Or, perhaps, it was another but VERY similar design

There were also two from the same batch here in Melbourne (in Caribbean Gardens, used as offices) but they were sold couple of years ago.
Just when I started to think to buy one of them

It seems there is another one still being used as a house somewhere near Frankston (or this is just a rumour?).

Well I guess Bojan there would be quite a few buildings out there that have a UFO shape, even before the Evoluon!
Wonder if they ( there are a few designers architects owners (Frits Phillips) etc) stole, copied, plagiarized or were inspired by such buildings!
To see it up close was amazing though! From memory it was huge! ( in a 15 year olds mind! and I'm sure still is)

Me too :-)
Imagine, living in one of these
The only drawback could be the relatively strong smell of polyester resin (quite obvious in those two Caribbean Gardens offices).

That would be my fault.
I was a fibreglass laminator at Carribean Gardens

I've seen a few of those UFO buildings around Oz, from very small public libraries to enourmous government buildings.
I reckon they look great
