Windas 7 does not like my USB thumb drive

Just spent a small fortune updating the PC after a major crash which saw a new MB, Ram (12GB ) and CPU installed along with a whole lot of other stuff. Installed windas 7 and have been having loads of fun trying to get the thing to run properly . I have (touch wood) solved most of the gliches but one sod remains. When I plug in my USB drive it is detected (auto detect comes up) but as soon as I try to copy something to or from the device windas freezes. Boy this program crashes hard and I wouldn't want to do too many manual shut downs. I have read just about every possible tech article/web forum I can get my hands on and it appears to be a problem between windas 7 and a number of mass storage USB devices. Most problems seemed to be around a particular chip set but mine is intel ??? I have updated the bios, chipset drivers etc etc but the problem persists. I can open the device on my win 7 laptop and any other computer I have plugged it into (win 7 PC's included). Why not this one? Any ideas? I have tried a heap of other USB sticks, some work ok, some work once then cannot be accessed whilst some will not work at all.

Do ya have a pci usb card kicking around that you can plug in?
Sounds like a hardware problem.

No I don't Robin. I was using my USB TV reciever tonight and it times out every 5 mins (exact) losing reception. A power setting/saver issue, perhaps legacy on the MB???

If you go to control panel / system and security / power options / change plan settings / change advanced power settings / usb settings / usb selective suspend settings ... and disable them there. That will stop the pc from powering off usb devices to save juice.

have got this sorted yet
it may be as simple as a usb conflict eg usb 2 stick into a usb 1 port
just a thought

No Mate it's all USB 2.0. I did another fresh instal and plugged the usb in when I made changes. It all worked well until one of the windows updates took it out. I have other usb storage thumb drives which work properly so I will leave it. It just seems to dislike this one stick. The TV reciever is working and does not turn off any more as I tried Robins solution and it worked .
