Artificial Ionosphere and Aurora

Scientists in Alaska have produced a senction of artificial ionosphere and visible aurora using a high powered radio array. More here at Nature:

HAARP...that's been around for years. Run mainly by DARPA. Whole idea is to use it as a weapon to disrupt radio communications, amongst other things.

They're playing around with things they still don't really understand. As far as I know, they haven't used it at full power because they're not sure what will happen, but they could destabilise the ionosphere if they do and cause all sorts of bother.

This is exactly what happens when the military and their associated industrial buddies get carte blanche to do as they please, along with the money to do it.
