They say if you only have one filter, this is the one to have.......I ended up with the 2" version.

Description

The NPB (Narrow Pass Band) filter is an Ultra High Contrast type of filter that is very effective for small and fainter emission and planetary nebula and a variety of bright nebula, especially through larger scopes. Another nice feature of the NPB filter is the very natural coloration yielded by this UHC type filter. Star images retain a much more natural color, in addition to pinpoint star images. High transmission at the 656.3nm Hydrogen Alpha emission line is a bonus for this design.

We have the 1.25 and the 2" NPB Filter and they are just great. A much more natural image than the Astronomik UHC which we have in the 1.25 size. The NPB gives a much more natural colour of stars and doesn't darken the image of the nebulae at all.
It makes the sight of M42 and Tarantula something spectacular.

Without the NPB its like you're looking through a different EP.

Great pickup Harb

The 2" version was my Christmas present last week aswell - also sourced from Omega Optical. I have had it out once in the backyard under first quarter moon suburban Brisbane and I was really impressed in how much more of Eta Carina jumped out at me. Similar in performance to my 1.25" UHC but with slighly more natural star colours. Can't wait to get it to a dark sky site and give it a proper work out.

Good purchase Harb! I too was searching for a good all-rounder and thanks to IIS forums and comments from members like Tamtarn and others, I decided to try the 1.25" NPB from Omega. Received it 2 weeks ago and hasn't dissappointed,

Congratulations Harb, astro_south AND skies2clear on your new filters, it seems like there is quite a rush on these babies and I am jealous!

It's such a shame that no one in Oz is carrying them yet .. perhaps that new dealer I read about here on IIS very recently may pick them up.

I'm still waiting for finances, etc, to settle to buy one of these, though I am wondering whether to buy it in 2" (to use with 30mm 80 degree UWA ep) to enjoy big rich views of nebulae such as Orion and Carina (does this filter help on Taranatula as well?). I know the 2" would be great on these, but am I perhaps better getting the 1.25" version for use with 8 - 13 - 17 mm ep's for more mag factor on other nebula targets?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve

We have both 2" & 1.25" filters.
The 2" is used on our 27mm & 17mm, both being 2" barrels and the 1.25 is used on the 10mm & 7mm.

The most pleasing views of Orion - Tarantula & Eta Carina for us are with the 17mm.

With your 8 - 13 - 17mm I would definately go for the 1.25", also considering the cost factor. Unless you are planning on buying more 2" ep's

If you wanted to be able to use the same filter on all ep's, 2" filters can be screwed on to the bottom of your 2"\1.25 adapter and 1.25" ep's can then be used with a 2" filter, but you would need to fit a spacer between the adapter and the filter so that the bottom of the 1.25" ep barrel did not touch the filter.A cheap colour filter frame ( with glass removed is best used as this spacer ). If you go that way I can let you know best place to get one for a spacer

I still think the best way to go with your ep's would be the 1.25" as the most used ep's will be your 13 & 17mm.

Thanks David .... I must admit I often jump directly from my 30mm 80 degree ep down to the 13mm 68 degree for almost all of my viewing, so I'll make sure I try the 17mm instead on the usual nebulae and see how the field of view covers things - if I find that perspective pleasing and that it covers the area I want it to I'll go with the 1.25" filter as you suggested.

I've had the DGM NpB filter for about a year nor and lov it. Great views of M42 Eta c, Tarantula. would reccommend it to anyone

Thanks David. As usual, the weather has been poor, so hopefully will improve soon. Must say, Omega were very good to deal with, prompt response and didn't overcharge for shipping like some places do. Can whole-heartedly recommend dealing with them.
