My new Meade 14mm UWA s4000 - A few questions...

Hi Everyone!

My Meade 14mm UWA s4000 EP arrived today! YAY! I bought it off ebay last week for $250 and its in MINT condition!

I can't wait to try it out, if on the CLOUDS would dissapear!

I know this EP can go in both 2" and 1 1/4 focusers however it looks as though the 1 1/4 section on the bottom is made to be removed. It has a small grub screw in the 2" section which appears to hold the 1 1/4 section in place. If I remove this screw the bottom section can then be unscrewed leaving just the 2" section.

My questions are:

Is this the way this EP is made to be used?

and

As the bottom section contains some lens elements does removing this section alter the FOV or lens characteristics?

Any help or info about this EP would be appreciated!

Congrats Dave! I had my eye on that one too, but let it go for lack of funds. Glad another iceinspacer got it. At a very good price too!

You don't need to unscrew the barrel itself. It's meant to stay in place. The 2" barrel on the outside is only for convenience so you can use the EP in either 2" or 1.25" focuser without needing adaptors. Whether you use it as a 1.25" or 2" makes no diff optically.

So I guess the screw is just there for safety?

It would need to be removed it was going to be used in a 2" focuser. It seems strange that is is there at all, the bottom section is quite firmly held in possition buy its own thread.

I was considering a 13mm Hyperion but then I saw this EP on ebay which ended up only $30 more expensive. It seems to be held in high regard...

I hope I have made the right choice, this is my first EP purchase.

For sure!

I don't know where you're supposed to put the screw. The 12mm Nagler T4 has a similar barrel setup. I always thought that screw being there a bit odd.

When you insert the 1-1/4" section, the 2" skirt hides the focuser setscrew. The eyepiece's screw tightens on the outside of the focuser to hold the eyepiece in place--otherwise it would not be held in at all.

Ive had one for over 10 years, and its great. Color is great and even in an f4.5 scope it brings sharp star points to the edge of field. Better than my 24mm series 5000 monster.
Dont let that eyepiece go. Everything goes first before that one.
Very rare you find them for sale.
