Interesting.
I wonder what the glass is made of?

I actually owned one of these lenses!

While it looked very cool, to be frank, it was probably one of the worst 1000mm lenses I have ever had the displeasure to have owned.

It had ghosting, spherical error, coma and significant chromatic aberration...was glad to get rid of it.

I'm amazed. It seems that lenses get very $$$ north of 400mm. At those focal lengths, I'm surprised they didn't just mount a camera on a telescope, or use one of hose catadioptric lenses. So much glass there - 32KG! Ideal for Twitchers who can mount it on the gun turret of their Sherman tank!!

I agree it is probably only good for sitting on the mantel piece, a bit hard to take camping so to speak, but it dose look pretty awesome and would make a good talking point.

So Peter just out of interest what price would this go for at auction, i mean what is something like this really worth.

Oh it has a huge 'cool' factor. Imagine the things that lens has seen!

they did, I've got ex-soviet 500mm cat lenses which are pretty good especially for the time they were made. Still optic quality you'd all complain about if you were given one of these expensive lenses. The were not made for ignorant consumers, just ignorant government contracts with the budget to pay for a single lense instead of mucking about with complicated things like adapters and teleconverters.

Only worth whatever the market pays.

Birns and Sawyer were just a few blocks from Hollywood General Machining (aka Losmandy) and Scott picked up a number of their different "uber-telephoto" lenses during a warehouse sale. I twisted his arm for one of them and paid about $US3400 some 15 years ago..and dragged it back across the Pacific.....my god it was heavy!

My HGM200 groaned under its weight....and I groaned with the first light image...what a shocker!

My AP155 blew it away in every respect.

I dragged it back to the USA...and basically got my money back.
