The trouble with a shuttered camera like the QHY9 though is you have to shut a min 3sec flat, then it takes another 15-20secs to download if you're shooting unbinned. Even with the Sky Flats plug-in adjusting the exposure time, its tricky to collect too many flats in one go (especially if you double up with darks which then have gradually increasing times to match).

Don't get me wrong - I LUV my QHY9 though

I like to have a bias library too in case I go nuts on the night and shoot an exposure length I've never done before - Pixinsight or Maxim can then worry about scaling as required the master dark cal frames as Robin says.

Phew. Just finished a run of calibration library shots. 20 hour marathon non-stop, and that was only the ones taken at -10deg as a starter! 20 darks each of 1x1 and 2x2 binning, at 5secs (for flat-darks), 5 mins, 10 mins, and 15 mins, plus biases at each bin (in case I need them for some reason, but shouldn't if using darks and flat-darks)

BTW I'm using Nebulosity and the Nebulosity Sequence Generator - what a fantastic supplementary program that is! And free!

Don't burn your camera out before you point it at something worth taking a pic of Troy .

I find it normally takes over 24hours to do a full set of cal files ranging from 20min to 60sec for darks binned x1 and x2, a dozen each, plus bias files for x1 and x2 about 30 each. I don't capture at x3 or x4 so don't bother with cal files for them.

I would of course reshoot for the current season if I updated drivers or similar on the system.

I just finished the 24hr run. I added in some 30, 60, 120, and 180sec exposures. I was running -15degrees, with the cooling power at 88-92%. I did leave the air-con on in that room today though.

400 images, 3.87Gb of data - currently being backed-up to the network storage box and will be burnt to DVD as well!

Troy - I guess this means we'll have a cloudy weekend to look forward to!
