D5500 - A Good low noise/high dynamic range choice.

Next you should download "Digicamcontrol" for tethered control of your camera from your PC/Laptop via USB cable. Your model, the D5500 is fully supported and the software is free. It is quite versatile - download it, start it, plug in your camera. It should recognise and confirm your camera model (bottom LH screen corner) immediately. Then have a play and learn. You can easily set up a sequence of shots at various apertures (if shooting via lens), various durations, various ISO. It supports bulb mode, which means greater than 30 second exposure lengths are possible (not possible on camera alone, without a seperate release/intervalometer type device )

Enjoy yourself!

I believe the Backyard Nikon software is still the best tethered solution, offering full control over the imaging session. However, it does cost money ($50USD). A possible future investment.

Used the Nikon thru the scope and got the new lappy on the net long enough to get deepskystacker.

Spent half the night capturing in raw only to realise I have no software to manage it.
So did some jpeg +raw? and darks just of stars directly above to have something to work with, ... Up until four not producing much but having fun.

Slowly getting there.

Mount probably needs pulling down and I think I will go for grease rather than light oil cause I cant see pulling it apart like I once did... Should have pulled it down before I started.

Consider setting the camera to only output RAW files, it will save you some storage space, and its a little faster downloading to the laptop when using Backyard Nikon.. I was surprised the first time i opened my capture file and found all these big jpegs in there next to the RAWs. Also suggest selecting 14 bit images, default seems to be 12 bit.
DSS will certainly stack RAW files, and can produce an output file in Tiff or Fit format. Tiff is good if you want to process in Photoshop.

I set it to raw but could not get those images into DSS, and thought I needed software to convert them into something else. That's why I went for the raw jpeg ...a wild guess but I could get them into DSS.

Anyways I am not thinking clearly as I stayed up till 4 am and my short sleep was restless...I am slow at the best of times but today more so.

Hi Alex,
If you're interested, Hutech will have IDAS filters for your D5500 available in a week or so.

IDAS filters for Nikon D5500 will be available here:
http://www.sciencecenter.net/hutech/prices/filters.htm
Or in Aus:

Maybe also contact Robin Lee at Cylops Optics, as they may be able to source them as well...?
