G'day, is there a program that will allow me to see what is on my DSLR screen / viewfinder on my laptop or i pad?

Which DSLR?
For Canons on PC you could use free APT or BackyardEOS. For Nikon there is BackyardNikon.

I have downloaded the backyard nikon software and it is good, thank you Luka, is there a similar program or a similar way to connect the camera to an I pad?

I know the latest Canon (EOS760D for certain) have wifi. Enables you to see liveview on an ipad with a Canon app. It is not bad although control is fairly limited, for example you cannot use Bulb exposure.
It works by setting up the camera as a wifi access point and you just link your ipad to it. I have used it a couple of times for group shots.

Not aware that Nikon have something similar.
